    xbox live connection problems

    Hey

I've got a 360 and am having problems getting it connected to Live. When I test the connection, it fails the DNS part 9 times out of 10. I've got my settings as follows:

    IP: 192.168.2.8
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.2.1

    DNS: 0.0.0.0

My router is set to DHCP, and is giving the 360 an IP address. It's also showing the 360 as connected in the control panel.

Another problem I have is that when the 360 finally connects, all other traffic on my network slows right down. My router is 54g, and all other devices in my house are 54g. I've got the 360 cabled directly to the router through ethernet. Is there something I'm not setting up correctly here?

Also, I was wondering if theres any way of getting my 360 to connect to my router wirelessly without buying the ripoff MS wifi adapter.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Not sure if I can help but someone here might. When I had connection problems I found the xbox live help desk to be extremely helpful. They literally talked me through the set up, could be a good place to try.

Thanks. I found out you can use 3rd party wireless stuff, but it has to be by ethernet, not usb. I've got an Asus WL-330 which is supposed to work with this, but am getting the same dns error. Do you have the number for the helpdesk please?

Set the DNS to the same as your gateway.

I had the connection issues too and found that putting the DMZ on the router as the xboxes IP address worked perfectly.

The only difference is I set all my IP addresses manually and don't use DCHP

I've done that, and have tried setting the IP address manually. I think I'm going to give up on this router, and try to get my WRT54GS working. I've posted for help with that here

If the settings you've quoted in the first post are correct, and they're the settings the router's dishing out via DHCP, then the most likely issue will be the DNS settings.

With a DNS server setting of 0.0.0.0, the Xbox isn't going to have any way of resolving the IP addresses of the Live servers (or owt else for that matter) and will - as you say - fail to connect. No DNS = no name resolution = no connection.

I'd say the router should definitely be flagging its own address as your primary DNS (it'll act as a forwarder).

Router-wise, I've had my 360 running on a Linksys WRT54G and a Netgear DG834GT without any issues and it's received the DNS server setting as the router address at the time.

you could always gets your isp's dns server settings and manually apply them to your 360. Worked for me. As for teh rest of the network slowing down, is there a firmware upgrade for the router around?

As said before - set the DNS to your routers ip - 192.168.2.1

I think you can use a wireless dongle instead of the MS one - used to do that with the original XBox anyway - something like this would work but there are cheaper alternatives (check out Linksys)
