I need an excellent strategy game and was wondering what is the current best strategy game?

i enjoyed the cossacks games but only as a short term relief, was quite funny firing 100 cannons at a city or sending 1000 hussars rampaging across the map
Age of Empires 2 - with the Conquerors expansion
C&C: Red Alert (1 and 2 are both good as is the orig. C&C)
Rome:Total War
the one that stands out for me was Red Alert. Remember getting home with that game and playing it non-stop. A Classic!

Civ 3, assuming you dont mind turn based strategy, if you mean rts, theres something of a surfiet of excellent ones - any c&c bar tiberian sun, warcraft 3, dawn of war, or if youre really into a challenge, homeworld 1&2.
