i enjoyed the cossacks games but only as a short term relief, was quite funny firing 100 cannons at a city or sending 1000 hussars rampaging across the map

C&C: Red Alert (1 and 2 are both good as is the orig. C&C)

the one that stands out for me was Red Alert. Remember getting home with that game and playing it non-stop. A Classic!
indeed, it was just as enjoyable stealthing it round the map with tanya, blowing stuff up as it was hammering the enemy with tesla coils and masses of vehicles and infantry

The one I keep going back to is Age of Mythology.
Metal Fatigue was great, slamming massive robots into TINY tiny tanks and solders.....

Civ 3, assuming you dont mind turn based strategy, if you mean rts, theres something of a surfiet of excellent ones - any c&c bar tiberian sun, warcraft 3, dawn of war, or if youre really into a challenge, homeworld 1&2.
