Bought this game yesterday and been playing it a bit today.
Its depressing me because my pc is chugging with it and I`m not even running it at my monitors native res
Very pretty game though and the combat system seems pretty good.
Only played for a few minutes so far though.
THink I need more ram. First Game I`ve played where the recommended setup needs more than a gig of ram
I'm guessing the RAM will make all the difference, the rest of your setup is pretty high end.
Theres loads in the FS forum right now.
Im really impressed atm.
You need a ninja pc to get it to run without chugging. With Oblivion I can run it pretty much with everything on and its pretty smooth. This chugs.
The combat is pretty good.
Im impressed
Gothic 3 needs another 6 months' work. It's a scandal that they released it in it's present state, as they obviously spent no time doing more than the most basic testing.
Combat, the primary gameplay mechanism, is completely broken by the rampant 'stun-locking', which means that a level 1 bloodfly with a fast attack is more likely to kill you than a slow level 20 troll. This becomes obvious from the first hour of play, which indicates they spent no time actually playing the game before release.
There are numerous geometry errors and glitches, but those aren't of any real consequence. There are some pathing errors which can produce major problems with the quests, though, and at level 10 I killed 2 dragons by firing arrows from above, but that's the level of cheese the combat system encourages.
The quest scripting seems to be well worked-out, apart from the fact that you can break the game early-on without warning if you liberate 3 cities. The storyline and subquests are quite compelling, and build up into a complex chain of things to do that is certainly far better than the disconnected subplots of Oblivion.
The graphics are good, not quite as lush as Oblivion, but in some senses better. The animations become a little ridiculous after a while, and the German-English translation is still a bit rough in places, "NPCx is taken away", but not as bad as Gothic 2 was.
All-in-all, this will be a good game next year, assuming they work on it a lot. Right now, it's not worth buying.
This game is soooo demanding what kind of system spec do I need to run it smoothly? My pc is screaming every moment. Gameplaywise it's great. Huge land to explore with full of surprises. Tons of quests. Beautiful graphics. Lovely scores. Thrilling combat. Game system needs bit of getting used to at first, but once you understand how it works it's ok I guess. Like Charleski said above, there seems serious balancing issue at the moment and I hope this will get fixed in forthcoming patches. All in all I'm satisfied with this purchase. It's a very buggy game but I can't stop playing as I'm enjoying every minute of it. It's a lot of fun
I remember my cousins' wife telling me about her trip to Florida, on the flight over she was talking to her friend and this American interrupted her and said how nice it was to hear people still using the welsh language. The thing is, she was speaking English (albeit with a strong welsh accent), but the guy just couldn't understand a word she said.

The game runs slowly because it's horribly written - it's full of bugs (there was a famous dual core bug btw) and feels completely half assed. Oblivion had the odd glitch but was/is so much more a polished product. A lot of potential in this one but QA is terrible to the point of the game being frustrating to play.
Thanks Kalniel, I've just ordered another gig of ram. Hope this will improve my gameplay. I love this game
Finally got my own copy
Took half an hour of frustrations to actually get the darn game to start - but after some fiddling of the windows firewall and removing the directX SDK it's started working perfectly.
Performance on high is too slow with my setup, but looks nice
Going to medium doesn't look as good as Oblivions medium, but runs fine. I've just about got a right balance now of high distance detail, depth of field post processing etc., but I have to use medium texture detail, no AF and no shadows for smooth performance in towns. I wonder if high textures needs 512mb, or if it's just the slower GPU - will find out when I upgrade to a x1950pro I guess!
In game I've had no bugs, though I've corrupted one save game already - but that was caused by my changing too many details at once - I recommend people play about with settings before getting too far into the game!
So far combat seems ok, it's a little bit random, but it's not as bad as I thought.
Gothic2 was comparable in time to morrowind, but had many of the features that oblivion trumpeted, like npcs going to bed and going to work etc. Had much better scenary as well.
Gothic 3 is similar in style to oblivion, and luckily lacks the latters "everything levels with you" feature. It is very large and open, with no loading areas at all (except when teleporting).
From what I have played, it would be better than oblivion if it wasn't for the bugs. Which are annoying. I can play fine for hours, and then the next day everything just has problems. Partly it is due to the copy protection, as with the first patched version it ran noticably better with a no-cd patch.
The combat is more complicated than oblivion, with more possible moves/blocks etc, but it can take a while to get used to.
