Ugh.. here we go. It's not my favourite idea ever, but it isn't spyware.
Please step away from the bandwagon.

BF2142 is just a mod of BF2, and the main change they made was to put billboards all over the maps. The mandatory spamware scans your cookies (takes time) figures out where you surf (takes time) and then sends info to spammmer servers around the world so they can start spamming you in the game (takes time and bandwidth).
If this were a free game, fine... but I paid $50, and now I am really mad. I am returning the game. I am boycotting all games with mandatory "in-game advertising".
Enough is enough.

IGA's CEO gave a complete description of what the software does a few lines up. It records your IP(almost everything records your IP), and calculates how much you look at the boardsm the angle and your local timezone. Yeah it's annoying we didn't get the game any cheaper or any benefit from it, but so long as everything it does is limited to BF2142, then it isn't spyware, or spamware or any other midly scary word you want to throw infront of 'ware'.

According to article on theregister.co.uk, the spyware also looks in you browser cache and cookes to see what sites you have visited and better target the adverts.
If you think about it, if all they are doing is recording your IP address country, and when you are on line, they can easily do that by looking at the server logs. They can probably figure out how long you saw a billboard and how much of your screen it took up with some more code on the server.
If BF2142 is anything like BF2, EA will run most of the servers anyway, so they will have access to all the info they claim they are collecting without putting anything on people's PCs
The fact that they are putting extra spyware on people's PC's implies that they are not being honest about what info they are collecting.
Theregister has long been the source of dubious reports. If you're really bothered, install the game and monitor what it sends, wont be that hard.
Biggest problem is despite be audience specific, what happens if Pampers comes up by accident... sure as **** would take my focus of the game and make me lose.
We have 5 elements which make up this theorem.
The Capacino Theorem:
BF2142 = Gaming = Escapism
Ads = Real World = Negative Escapism
Negative Escapism + Escapism = Nothing
Therefore BF2142 + Ads = Nothing

I am not trying to start a flame war or anything, but you are strangely quick to defend EA. Do you represent them in any way?
No i just bothered to read about what the software actually did, before jumping on the "omg EA is teh ebil and knows where you live" bandwagon. Most of the spyware stories are pure fiction.
Not one of them has any credible evidence of what they claim, and it would be very easy to prove.
I'm far from being EA's biggest fan, but I'm less of a fan of BS. the software doesn't, interfere with anything outside of the BF2142 application, it does not monitor internet browsing, it does not install itself secretly, in fact theres a huge un-needed disclaimer warning you about it.
It simply doesn't fall into any of the traditional definitions of spyware. It may be a pointless money grabbing excercise, but that doesn't make it spyware.
Use a packet sniffer and find my cookies list being sent to a central server and I'll change my opinion.

Yeah BF2 likes having loads open. you'll find most are just if you want to host a local server etc. I only ever opened one and it works fine for me.
Port 443 ?
Thats SSL isnt it ? - you'll find it hard to sniff stuff over that.
