    BF2 Strangeness

    Yes it is bugged etc.

I hadn't played on the internet in a while with it, so the update is around 1.3ish or something.

Anyway I had it all installed with my old graphics card - x800xl and it was all working nicely etc.

I just upgraded my graphics card to a 7900GS (NVidia) and now BF2 won't evn load, it goes to boot, screen goes blank and then it returns to desktop.

    Any help greatly appreciated

uninstall the drivers, run driver cleaner pro, install the latest from nvidia's website and try again !
also clean out the folder's in My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache
thats where all the shader files are for the driver settings.

The cache trick almost always fixes it. If not then a tried and tested re-install.

I get the same problem with my laptop, everything works fine until it tries to change the resolution, black screen comes up and then bang back to the desktop.

I havent found a solution yet as I even tried with a fresh install of XP32.

I am using a Nvidia QuadroFX 350m (in a dell precision m65) but it is strange that the latest Quadro's and the 7900 series appear to do the same thing.

Dodgy refresh rate? Try opening up your video.con and manually setting your in-game res and refresh rate to match your desktop. Just a shot in the dark.

what is video.con ? is that within the bf2 folder somewhere?

the strange thing is that with this new graphics card i can only choose 59 or 60Hz it is on a TFT so refresh rate shouldn't matter, should it?

I'll see whether there is soe conflict between bf2s settings. If that doesn't work I'll do a fresh install

A mate had issues with BF2 not loading when he moved from a CRT to a TFT (his was a refresh rate issue).

Put your old gfx card back in (if you still have it) and change the graphics settings to be a low resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz.

Then put your new card in and see if that makes any difference...

I don't own BF2, but make sure you try deleting the config file maybe? For example some games store there saves in a location such as "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\GameName", or in My Documents, or something along the lines of that anyway. And in that folder there may be a config file storing all the game config stuff.. like screen resolution, settings, etc. You could just edit the file but you can probably just delete it and the game should make a new *default* one.

    Well it worked

I cleared out the whole of the profile folder - I had to set up the user accounts again, but thats nothing.

I was rather looking forward to doing a fresh install tho

Thanks to you all for your help you saved me a lot of time
