    hl2 for ps2

my friend told me that hl2 would be getting a release on the ps2?!
he said he read it in pc-gamer or something
if it is surely itll be really pants graphics compared to the pc version? and apparently itll come out on xbox soon after but not gamecube?
surely this should jsut be a pc release because of the power required for it also this may mean theyll bring doom 3 out on consoles?

well the xbox only has direct x8 ( i think ) graphics card - hybrid geforce3 type thing, so it wouldnt be able to make hl2 look all nice with its dx9 shaders etc, also its only got a 733 processor, and thats like the minimum really needed, so i doubt it would look very good at all.. as for it coming out at the same time of halflife, who knows when HL is even going to come out! heh

A console works in a differnt way to a computer though. If it is ported (likely) then the engine will be reworked to suit the new architecture.

This is why Halo looks and indeed plays much much better on an xbox next to a pc of comparable spec.

At 640x480 (or 760x576, or whatever a TV is) resolution, things like dx9 shaders don't really make much difference...

hmm.. anyone who is serious about hl will have to play it on a pc tho like the original, can still remember playing that on a friends p133 pc in the lowest graphics.. and then opfl. was so cool (my pc was only a 486 with win3.11 so it wouldnt install )

also steve, didnt it take like 2 years for halo to finally come out on pc? if it had come out 2 years ago on pc first (which i thought it was going to til microshaft bought it grr...) it would've been much better

i sincerely doubt half life 2 will get a PS2 release, for one thing they'd need to rewrite the entire engine mostly from scratch.

it's important not to see the xbox as a pc - it has very similar APIs and hardware, but it's also got the main advantage of consoles - a unified architecture. i managed to obtain a leak of the unreleased Half Life port for Dreamcast - and it's great. a PC certainly wouldn't do 640x480 High-definitiion pack with a 120mhz processor and 12mb of ram. the same applies to the xbox - 733mhz can go a very long way when not restricted by having to run at the lowest common denominator.

that said, the ps2's architecture is horrific & wrong. hl2's been written with directx in mind, and the simple concept of "mhz", neither of whihc apply to the ps2's ram-free parallel processor design.

basically, don't expect hl2 on ps2 anytime soon, if it is released it'd be with a rewritted (i.e. massively cut down) engine.

many of the hl2 delays are to get the xbox porting done, the same reason for doom 3 delays.

and the "pod thing" is a g4 iMac, often termed lampMac.

I'd be very very surprised if it appears on PS2. Xbox yes... PS2 - highly unlikely... its not powerful enough, its not good enough.

Well, they managed to release Splinter Cell on the GBA so I don't see why not.

I reckon they will work on a PS2 version, though I think they'll get a third party to do it. HL2 will apparently run on quite modest systems so I'm sure they could optimise it for the PS2. It probably won't look anywhere near as good as the Xbox version, let alone the PC version, but I'm sure it would be possible.

I'm sure Valve realise that not releasing a PS2 version is commercial suicide.
