    Free games?

Saw a friend of mine recently playing Quake, he tells me that it's something he just downloaded recently and that's it's freeware now. Is this right?

I like the idea of companies with really old games releasing them for anyone who still wants to play. I had a go and it certainly brought back the memories (I'd almost forgotten what a pixel looks like )

If it's true, anyone else know of any freely available classics from back in the day? Got a laptop, so don't want to make it struggle with anything new, but some of the old classics would certainly be worth the time it takes to download and install.

Okay, freely admitting I'm dense....Googled 'Free Games' and what did I get? Thousands of the damn things....I'm going to be so less productive from now on....About.com seems to have tonnes listed suprisingly enough.

quake is absolutely, positively *NOT* freeware. ID still own the rights to all data files for all quake games.

however, quake engines 1 2 and 3 are GPL - meaning there are a number of enhanced engines (e.g. tenebrae), standalone mods (e.g. tremulous, action quake 2), or complete games (e.g. nexuiz) which share some common quake heritage

downloading the complete doom or quake data files is piracy

I still occasionally load up GTA1/2, and have some old fashioned fun - there's nothing quite like it!

The original GTA is available to download from Rockstars website. I should download it, I haven't played it in yearsssss.

I have been playing a lot of GTA2 at home and College recently though (network games ftw).

Edit: Quickly looking on Rockstars website I think GTA2 might be free too now..

    Indeed it is.

Edit: Lure of the Temptress is free too. Good 'ol classic. (haha that game is the same age as me)
