    Techy PS3/360 question

    Hi all,

I've been looking at the specs of the PS3 and Xbox 360. It's all very confusing as i'm unable to find an up to date site with the ps3 specs.

I'ev heard from many people that the ps3 is more powerful than the 360. I'm pretty sure i heard that on the Gadget Show last monday.

    Thanks for your time

    Darren

    Hi Darrensen.

The gist of it is that PS3 is more powerful, but it's architecture is so parallelised that programmers will have a hard time getting the most out of it until they a) get used to it and b) get some good developer tools/compilers.

the exact specifications are around, but the short of it is: you won't understand them enough to make any meaningful comparison. nobody does really, not even the games developers.

Tech specs are largely irrelevant. You can have a machine 10 times more powerful than anything on the market, but if it takes a year longer (or is much harder) to code for and access this power, it counteracts.

The only thing that *really* matters is the end result. How does a game perform on one system compared to the other?
I suspect there will be very little difference in most things.

^agreed, not really much to be had from the tech specs, more just what features/add-ons/controllers you get in each one and if you'll use them.

It is going to come down to what games are developed for each platform that take advantage of them. cross-platform games will probably still be slightly biased towards one or the other system IMO, so may not be fit for direct comparison.

It's pretty fair to say the PS3 and the 360 will be on par with each other - it's not like the PS3 has better graphics processing, and there's only so much effect CPU power has on games (and both machines have plenty on hand).
I'd stake money on the same game on both systems looking identical. The only advantage in March will be that the 360 developers will have a much better handle on how to use the hardware, so in theory 360 games will look slicker..

PS3 is in theory more powerful. In the same way that a 3ghz celeron is in theory 50% faster than a 2ghz core 2 duo.

Raw speed/ghz figures don't mean as much as they once did. What matters is what can be achieved with the hardware.

The PS3 could do a bit more than the X360 if fully utilised. But the X360 is easier to work with.

The games on both look about as good as each other.

Hardware differences are negligible - looking at what one developer said (what the 360 lacks in power compared to the PS3 it makes up for with more memory) it's swings and roundabouts.

I'd say it's more down to the games - just look at what exclusive titles are available to both machines and which interest you and go from there.
The multi-platform games will (probably) have very little to differentiate between them.

I think personally that when it comes to the quality of games on a system, a lot depends on the quality of the development tools that are available and as I understand it the Xbox 360 has some of the best development tools in the business, the Nintendo Wii is very similar to the Gamecube to develop for and as with the PS2 the PS3's 1st party development tools arent exactly user friendly and neither is the PS3 hardware. Plus you have to consider that developers have already been developing Xbox 360 content for about 18 months now and will be more familiar with it's development systems than the others.

I heard the PS3 is hard to code for due to the cell cpu.

the ps2 was hard to code for due to the emotion engine CPU - but a lot of games WERE, mostly due to the hard work of middleware vendors like renderware

The quality of development tools drives how easy a system is to program - and on that score MS are hard to touch..

As people have said - it's about that games. PS3 will have Tekken, Gran Turisno etc. but the 360 will have DOA, Gears of War, etc.
