Anyone picked up NeverWinter Nights 2

Went a bit quiet with this title which makes me suspicious. Anyone picked it up?

If so, what are your first impressions?

    It was released on Friday.

A friend of mine got it as soon as it was out... and hasn't stopped playing since! Seems pretty good to me.

I have heard mixed things about it and that it can happily bring the most powerful pc to its knees with graphics worse than oblivion. Good story though apparently!

I got my copy on Friday; spent a large amount of Saturday playing it. It's amazing how quickly it can kill time. >.<

It's true that the graphics aren't that great and that it runs pretty badly; I've got a 7900GT and had to turn the textures down to medium and turn off reflections in order for the game to be playable and not mess me around every time I tried to move the camera slightly.

Great game though, I'd definitely recommend picking it up.

I picked this up and have played it a lot.

It's a good game - a solid RPG - deep enough for hard core RPG fans whilst having enough 'auto' stat options buttons to make it accessible for the majority. Solid storyline and plenty of good spells.

Graphically - it looks pretty good if you jack all the options up - trouble is, it doesn't run so hot in the large outdoor areas (dungeon levels run _much_ faster) and wooded areas tend to annoy you as you're constantly presented with semi-transparent leaves in the way of your vision (they should of just clipped them) and I do wonder whether it's this that is making it slow down. Dropping draw distance helps, without making and noticable difference to graphics. Turn off environmental shadows for a real boost in speed - but it does look worse for it. From high up (typically how you play) the game looks great (to me) and the effects for spells and weapons are very good. Sound wise it's good - emotive music and good sound effects - with the exception of the amazingly loud and annoying effect for the tentacle spell (great spell).

Sound and graphics aside, NWN2 is all about gameplay - and there's nothing wrong here. It takes a while to switch from Dungeon Seige mode (i.e. playing the battles in realtime and just rushing in) to hitting the space bar to pause and giving your team members an order for their next strike (and then repeating the process a few seconds later). In this respect it feels more like turn-based fighting - it's not annoying and actually quite refreshing as opposed to letting the AI make non-strategic decisions and getting your party killed.

The game feels BIG - lots of side quests to be done (optional) and i'm sure i've only scratched the surface as yet.

Don't forget to use the built in updater before you play - it's already had a fairly large patch out.

Did you play the original, or have you played Baldurs Gate 1/2 ???

I read in one review it's more like BG than NN, if that's the case I may pick it up

I preferred the combat system on the first Neverwinter and didn't pause at all during combat. It was just so fluent. Does that fighting style work on this one also as I didn't like the combat on BG series.

May give it another week or so as I'm really into Need For Speed Carbon at the min!

The Lawful Good version was waiting for me when I got home from work Thursday night (and X-Fire got updated Friday night ). Luckily I just finished Titan quest (I did start Epic difficulty, but once I've completed normal I didn't find the same pull to keep going - maybe in a couple of months time )

I didn't think the graphics were that impressive, but then again I'm only using a 6600 - so that's par for the course. Other than that it seems pretty good so far, I don't have (what I consider to be) a monster PC and it seems to run fine at max res with medium textures, although I do have a quite a few of the other options (like shadows) turned off or low.
I think I'll proberbly need to pick up a new graphics card for christmas though, as my 6600 GTOC is starting to show it's age.

I haven't played the original NWN (yet... although, as it was in the box, I'm sure I'll give it a go at some point) and didn't play BG for very long (always been meaning to go back to it though) but I can see me getting addicted to this.

So far I've got to the harbour where I need to find a boat to Neverwinter.

So far I've completed all the side quests I've come across on the way, even going back and redoing sections from an earlier save if I thought I could get a better outcome (I replayed 1 section which had you try to rescue hostages from a bandit camp, if any died on the way out, you'd get a different cut-scene than if you managed to save all of them).
It's also interesting how a minor thing can affect a cut-scene - I left a fort via a map marker directly through the gate and the cut scene shows someone watching you leave the fort from a rocky outcrop. If I left via a different map marker (say the one I entered the map from) then the cut scene showed the person watching me from a completely different area.

I haven't tried it online yet, so I can't say anything about that.

Have to say that I have been playing it for around an hour now and it draws you in the same way as the first game. Love it and can't wait to see more of it.

Its also bug free virtually (I havn't noticed anything at all personally), always a great thing when a game has been playtested to this extent

I bought it on release as I was dead excited about this game (was a massive fan of the 1st)

I played it for about 2 hours and have not been back to it, I find the camera movement so infuriating that I really can't bring myself to enjoy the game.
