Time to upgrade...

Hey guys...

Im at the stage where my trusty P4 3.0ghz & Neo platinum 2 MSI combo need upgrading. I have a 7800gtx so i think there is still some life in it yet.

Can anyone recommend a cpu &mb option that is £300 or less and would ensure im gaming smoothly and nicley for a while to come.

I think going with AMD will be a wiser choice for my gaming needs.

Did you try overclocking that 3.0Ghz? I'm sure you can easily get it above 3.6-3.8Ghz with £40 of good air cooler..

That way you can save £260 for something else..

go with Intel (Core2Duo), it is ahead of AMD at the moment.

tbh I dont think going from P4 to C2D will be a HUGE difference to playability.

You can pick up an Opteron system, new mobo and new RAM for under £300 and that would raise your FPS. In terms of cost to benefit, it may just be easier and more future proof to save up £400 and then get C2D.

But your rig sounds good enough for most games with the majority of settings turned on.

Yeah my boss recommends the c2d.

I have read some good thigns about the optys for gaming. I primarily play cs:source, but as new games come out i would like to be able to play them without fuss.

Can someoene put together a list for £300- amd spec and then c2d (if possible)

I have a p4 3.2ghz with a 6800gt and it runs most things just fine. Are you looking to upgrade for UT2K7 or something?

I have an AMD 64 X2, but right now I would go for an Intel C2D. In a few weeks, I'll be up for a nVidia 8800GTX though........

C2D is the best. I think when windows vista comes out it is the timne to upgrade.
