time is the best for this game, your going to look a total and utter n00b for a couple of weeks at least.
try learning to fly on an empty server, otherwise you will end up getting vote kicked for n00bishness

Yeah whatever you do do NOT try to learn to fly on a ranked server. Either practice in single player or on an empty server.
Learn to be good infantry first and keep hammering that for a while. Then get your tank/APC/other ground vehicles in.
Learn to fly planes and choppers in single player mode without crashing then people wont mind you using them online.

There is nothing more annoying than some n00b that keeps plane/chopper whoring and crashing in a ranked game

The best way to practice flying is create your own LAN server. Then you have full access to all weaponary with no NPCs nicking your equipment and you can fly around for hours.

Once you start to feel confident that you can control the jet/chopper then tryout your dogfighting skills on an unranked server.

I was pretty crap for ages. Bought a joystick and got a bit crapper further still.

Then decided to just sit there for an hour and learn how to take off, land and bank. More advanced things came later and now I'm so so.

Of course, if you want a champ speak to Mullet. Man is insane in a chopper and Gonzo above ain't half bad either

I think the main problem you have is all the people shooting you down have been flying for months and are very good at it.

In the plane try not to stay over the enemy for to long, fly in drops bombs, afterburner back to re-arm and shoot anything airborne down on route if you can and the machine gun is god. You'll only hit bad pilots with the missiles. it can also kill cars, SAM sites, spray spawn points and flags, There isn't much you cant kill with it, remember when shooting at a flag to aim around it, where the infantry are, not the flag itself. Keep your bombs out until you need to fire the missiles, that way the enemy wont get any warning beeps.

With the heli, make sure you have a gunner and give him lots of opportunity to fire the TV missile. Which you need to line up for him as it can only go straight ahead and usually takes a few seconds for the gunner to switch to missile aim and fire.

Spray SAM sites with rockets, even if their empty. Learn to strafe, yup the old fashioned quake tactic of running sideways around a target is perfect for the chopper, pick a busy flag, take out the SAM then strafe around it and your gunner will shred infantry. Flying toward turning around and doing the same again over and over wont give you any time to pick a target and kill it. Watch out for jeeps too, they can shred a chopper in a few seconds and have a good range, so once they start shooting you it's pretty hard to escape.

When you're killing you want to be just above the tree level, when you're moving you want to be out of the way and low, get down the side of hills on the edge of the map or the island and so on.

If you spot another chopper it's all about TV missiles, so line it up for your gunner, preferably when their flying in a straight line toward or away from you. If their coming toward watch for them doing the same thing. This might sound obvious but when you see the TV missile try and dodge it, it isn't hard, but most pilots seem to just hover and wait for doom. Dont be afraid to to pull a roll or loop once your missile is in the air, while it's reloading you dont want to be in the other choppers firing line, make sure you're high enough though You can also hide the TV missile in a barrage of rockets, which makes it harder to spot and dodge.

When you're repairing/rearming, try to do it somewhere other than the attack chopper spawn. With the carrier, try going down the side or behind the tower. On normal airfields use the transport chopper pad, less likely to be attacked by planes etc. Never hover perfectly still, move a around a little bit so you can see anything coming.

Most importantly don't be a chopper/plane whore, if someone is on the pad before you, then they get it. Don't TK for them. Feel free to go spray people doing it on the other side. Wake as USA is great for this.

If you don't play infantry often you wont know where people hide/camp, spawn points, or the routes most players take across a certain part of the map. 90% of players follow exactly the same movement pattern.

Quite possibly my longest post ever

Find a decent squad preferably 4 or more players and stick with them. nothing can stand up to a well organized 6man squad. You will die a lot less too.

Yeah flying along normally then suddenly my super high tech machine wants a close up of the dirt. The way it swaps between forward flight and hovering gets annoying too, never was a fan of the VTOL controls.

Do you have a flight stick? You NEED a flight stick for planes in BF2. It makes it a hell of alot easier.
