Anyone got any of the Razer HP-1 Gaming Headphones?

I've got my birthday coming up and I'm seriously tempted. Before moving house I used to have a complete surround speaker setup, and I used to use it all the time for gaming. Since moving I've had to resort to a basic headset and I'm missing my surround goodness.

Now I've only got a basic Audigy 2 soundcard and I'm not going to blow another 150 quid on a new soundcard, but I assume the HP-1 will work OK with that?

I've seen them on Scan at about 90 quid, and it mentions on there that Hexus lads had a sample for review, so where's the text lads?

But - either way I'd like to hear from anyone who's got a pair.

    "Conclusion

So where does this leave us? Well as a product, the Barracuda's are built to last. They are extremely durable, strong and above all comfortable. The 5.1 surround sound does work well, but is no substitute for proper surround sound speakers. However for headphones, they are the best surround sound units that I've used. When listening to music or watching DVD's they perform well and their in game performance brings depth and a spacial atmosphere that stereo headphones cannot match.

However the lack of bass was the only real thing that I found disappointing and no matter what I tweaked, I could not get that balance right. This certainly seems to be a problem for surround sound headphones as a whole, as it is very hard for their reduced size subwoofer speakers to match the performance of a good set of stereo headphones. Perhaps using the HP-1's along side the Razer AC-1 soundcard would have produced more favorable results, as no doubt the AC-1 card is tweaked to get the most out of the HP-1 headphones. But as it stands, the Barracuda's lack the all-round frequency response that I have become accustomed to with a good quality pair of stereo headphones, and being somewhat of an "old school" gamer, I think I'll be sticking with my stereo headset for the time being."

I would post the link but hexus censors that domain.

    Cheers Buff.

A lack of bass is something I doubt I'd really notice to any huge extent, I'm using some very unbassy things at the moment anyway. It's the positioning I'm interested in, and since I can't have my surround speaker set up where the computer is, I think these will be about the best I can get.

I use mine all the time for gaming. They give good quality sound as long as you have a good sound card like the X-Fi range (mine is the Elite Pro).

I haven't had any problems with bass on them. You can adjust it on the levels on the remote and obviously via software but mine give a decent punch since EQed properly.

The mic sometimes picks up sounds from the headphones if you have them loud but it's just a matter of adjusting the threshold a bit.

I have a set, to work with my X-Fi Fatality card. The sound quality, and 7.1 surround experience is impressive.

While it worked, that is. I don't know if it is my rough treatment, or the shoddy build, but I have to be careful with the cable, and keep it in the right position, or the sound cuts out in various speakers in them.

my son stopped using his Barracudas after a month 'cos the mic wasn't picking him up well enough.
Build quality is very poor for the price. Sound quality isn't brilliant, bit muffled, and according to some reviews you can only appreciate these fully if you marry them up with the Barracuda sound card.
I liked my edimensional phones, but the bass frequencies cut out after having them for only 14 months and edim didn't offer me the chance to buy another pair at a discount when I complained so I moved on. However, the price at the moment is very cheap http://edimensional.com/index.php?cu...ath=22&sort=2a

Well, Deadlight sold me his HP1's so I'll be giving them a go for a bit but an alternative is always a good fall back measure if I don't get on with the Razers.

Oh yeah, and just to show that I am not just biased against the Razers, I also had similar problems with a pair of Speedlink Medusa headphones. I guess the more complicated they get, the more there is to go wrong.

Well I've got them and I'm in unconvinced as yet.

They really are poorly built, I can see a damaged cable (screening starting to peel away) and the lights in the headphones themselves don't work - though I'm not suprised, I've heard this is common after they've been banged about a bit and this probably happened in transit.

Sound quality is OK, but the amp is a touch noisy. To get around this I've found that you need to drive your sound card hard, then only just about turn up the headphones a touch. This way you get the volume without the hiss.

So far I've not had chance to play a game with them on, but I did download the MS 5.1 audio test files where they bounce a sample around the different speakers. The L/R/Centre seem fine, but the rear sounds aren't convincing at all, just as I suspected - if anything they sound further forward than the forwards, and I was tempted to see if I'd got them on the right way around!

Once I've used them a bit more I'll revisit the thread, but for now - I'm just glad I didn't pay 90 quid for them, because I'd of been sorely disappointed.

Ok - I'm slightly more convinced, I found a problem with the set up. Despite my sound card promising me it was running in 5.1, it was only working in 2 channel mode.

One quick reinstall of the drivers later, I'm able to properly select 5.1 mode, and things are a whole lot better. Time for a serious gaming session now!

I'm also thinking of getting a surround sound head set. The Barracuda's look good but seem to be over priced. Anyone had any experience with the Medusa headset? The non USB one?

I have the Medusa one as well. The one I ordered came with an amp unit that supports plugging in two sets of headphones, which is cool. The sound is great, even though it made funny noises the first month or so. However, as with my Razers, the connections seem to have gone all funny along the cable, and now aren't much help.
