Man shot in PS3 launch frenzy

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061117...tyleusinternet

"Elsewhere, however, the mood was uglier with a shooting by armed muggers at a Wal-Mart store in Connecticut and reports of stampedes and punch-ups across the nation, from the east coast to Los Angeles.

Police said two armed men approached a queue of 15 to 20 people who were waiting for the PS3 outside the Wal-Mart in Putnam, Connecticut and demanded money from them. One of them confronted the robbers and was shot."

    That's pretty insane.

To be honest I think the launch could have been held back for a little longer so they could produce more stock. Then there wouldn't be such a desperate rush for everyone to get one.

Anyone who feels the need to queue for a time that's in the order of days, just to get a new games console, is in need of help. And by help I mean euthanasia.

No one was shot for a console, just a couple of thieves realised the PS3 launch was a great place to find 20 or 30 geeks carrying nearly $1000 each.

Still sad, just annoys me that somehow it's portrayed as the fault of the inanimate object they were queuing for.

Exactly. Most of us play video games, I've been playing them for years, I've owned most consoles that have been out in the last 15 odd years, and I've never felt the need to camp out for 3 days, living in a tent on the street, to get one.

I mean, are you honestly telling me these PS3 peeps are so desperate to play Tony Hawks Project 8, that they will live on the street in some cheap tent, for days at a time?

Zelda pisses all over the PS3 launch titles from what I've seen (Anyone got any excitment at all for them, apart from a passing interest in Resistance: Fall of Man?) and thats not worth more than a half hour outside Woolworths, and even then only if its not cold or raining.

If you are gonna do that, do it right. Don't get back to the house 3 days later, having been muged, and got frost bite, and your only reward is a session on Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire. You might top yourself.

I bought a PS2 at midnight on the launch, but only because my mate worked in Game so I could jump the queue.

Cold I can deal with, sleeping on the street i can deal with, muggers? No problem

Spending 3 days with people who're nerdy enough to camp outside for a games console... no effin way.

But if they'd held back and produced more stock then there wouldn't be such a desperate rush. No rush, no mainstream press. Why do you think the most pre-hyped stuff is never in stock for Christmas.
