    strange HL2 problem

I just downloaded HL2 from steam, figuring i should see what the fuss is about. It runs great, pretty much maxed out settings at about 35-45fps, but my keyboard and mouse seem to be glitching.

It's a bit like having lag in that holding down one of the strafe keys works fine, but when released, the character keeps moving in that direction for about half a second, then slowing to a halt. This isn't too bad in itself, being only slightly annoying when turning corners.

The really bad bit is that occasionally, the pc only seems to accept input from one or the other (keyboard, mouse). Ie. i'll be strafing towards some combine and it wont let me move the crosshair..

This is frustrating, but i was wondering if it's because my graphics settings are too high or if i've got some stupid setting on that's smoothing my movements. I'm tending towards some other glitch though, because most of the time it runs smoothly - and a restarting the game sorts it out.

For your info, i've got the lateset nVidia driver, Steam has updated HL2 to the best of my knowledge and my specs are <<<.

Try turn the graphics down a bit.

If you're running it with Antialiasing, turn it down a bit, or off. That seems to cause a bit of mouse lag for me when I run games with 8xS AA. So I just use 4xAA and that sorts it out, usually.

Might be a stab in the wind, but are you using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo??? Could be a battery related problem or somthing similar.

A while back I had a problem kinda like that and it was because i had something obstructing the receiving unit partially. If you have the software installed, check the battery level and signal strenghth. But if you dont have a wireless set, then, erm... do what the other guys said

Let us know how you get on

    Another stab in the dark:

Are you using zone alarm? If so, disable it and try again. ZA used to cause all sorts of odd problems with Half-Life, exactly like you described.

Just helped a chappie on another part of this forum who was using a logitech mouse. The drivers for their 'mice' are terrible with Source games.

Ditch the drivers and see if that helps.
