    Gears of War overrated?

So I had a good play of this in all aspects recently. It's a good game and a lot of effort has been put in. But, it does feel very familiar at the same time. When the EA exec said there was nothing special about it I understand what he meant because it's not an innovative game. Fun, but nothing that hasn't already been tried in the last few years at least. The fact that it's only a 4v4 arena felt a bit empty but then again it's well known (I think) that consoles generally support fewer clients than their PC counterparts.

    Anyone else think the same?

I know a lot of hexites here don't like me because I'm a realist, but hang on in there...

It's gonna be very hard if not practically impossible for a developer to come up with a wholly "new" game nowadays. With the range and reach of games on the market there's not a lot more niches you can cover.

However GoW does very well in elevating 3rd person shooters to a new level: in my opinion. Previously they were hard to use and clunky with camera views all over the place (once again: IMO), but Gears took these and added an extra level to them.

Fast paced and furious the game plays like you really are struggling against an Alien Race. This is unlike Quake 4 and Doom 3 where you felt slightly distanced from the action. For me Gears makes it feel like your starring in a movie with some excellent cut scenes that perhaps become a bit tiresome as I'm bad at the game (but getting better) and have to watch them a few times!

The weapons are responsive and feel real and the sound makes them "feel" awesome. Well placed cinematic sound also immerses you in the action and the touches like the Locust talking when you come into view are very good.

I have been getting annoyed with the friendly AI in all honestly who seem to stay the same no matter what level you play on. They die a lot and leave you dealing with a large number of clever enemies fighting you. Here I come onto the enemy AI. I think it's probably equal to if not better than the AI in Farcry or FEAR which is a pretty good compliment. When your hurt or reloading it will storm you and this makes the game pretty challenging which is great.

The cover system is very good although the A button is hard to get used to with so many functions. I think this is where the game could have been improved a bit with some different button assignment, but it is hard to get that on a controller I suppose.

Anyway my point is that all in all these factors combined make it a great game. It's taken the best bits from quite a few games, added them together and added some spice. Together with an amazing game engine and sweet sound it's certainly approaching the best game I've ever played.

kempez, im pretty sure blue (or maybe yellow) will skip the scenes. It certainly did in co-op anyway

Aye that it does but it took me a while to figure out

Plus I like watching them, but it would be a bit better to have the save point after the cut scenes (where applicable) so you can get straight into the action

I dont agree with your comment "it's not an innovative game" - its the 1st game that has taken the cover system this far, most games when it comes to cover its a choice but you can be rambo about it if you wish GoW its part of the game, it has to be used.

Remember that guy from EA saying that their was nothing innovative about GOW? (HE's the guy behind Army of Two). I was watching some trailers the other day and gameplay footage and the funny thing is that the cover system in Army of Two looks almost identical to GOW. I reckon he was annoyed that Epic managed to nail the cover system before he did.

heh i thought that too Steven, i was quite impressed with that army of two video though, especially the bit where he was dragging him along as he was wounded and he was still shooting at them. Loks like a decent game but im pretty sure ea can ruin it before it comes out

and not only is the cover system the same but some of the cover they used in Army of Two was the same as well ^_^

I can't see how this game is seen as innovative. The cover system has not been so deeply implemented in any other game released, the fact that you can set up a public coop op game so you can run through the single player and if a random guy joins as Dominic, bonus! And as Kempez said, the Camera system. Nothing destorys a 3rd person gamer quicker then having a bad camera view but GoW pulled this off flawlessly I feel especially with the added 'bouncy' effect when running.

So no, I do feel that this game is overated.

In my humble opinion Gears of War is a pretty simple game, but it's just so damn good! It's almost the simplicity that shines through, there isn't that much that's new but what it does have is a huge amount of detail and everything just looks perfect.

Although short (my only slight complaint) I found the single player game to be brilliant, particularly on co-op. Did it all on Hardcore, enjoyed it so much we went back and did it on Insane.

Multiplayer however is where the game really shines. Before I'd played it I was concerned with the fact that it's only 4vs4. My concerns weren't needed as again simplicity shines through. You don't need numbers to make a good game, the teamplay on Gears is just fantastic. I only tend to play when my friends are online so we can team up and cause some chaos. The maps, the weapons, the controls, it all comes together in one perfect package online to give a multiplayer experience that I personally can spend hours on end playing. The controls and cover system are so intuitive that friends of mine (generally PC gamers) have found themselves totally fluent with the game after only a few matches.

Gears definately won't be everybodys cup of tea mind you. Some prefer the large scale combat of games like Call of Duty 3 or Lost Planet (try the MP demo).

Gow is definitely one game that is digging at me to by a 360, that and the fact that the next Banjo Kazooie game is 360 bound (I appreciate how many worlds apart those games are ).

Al mate i really cant agree with you on this one. I mean what games does it feel familiar with? you need to learn how to construct a reason for your statements, otherwise they just come across as you trolling. You get called a troll for a good reason. You post something with nothing to back up your claims, just to up your post count. Most people on here when they start their own thread actively particpate in it. You dont.

And what exactly constitutes a 'good play'? an hour playing coop on someone else xbox360? Do you even own one?

We really need to take this beef elsewhere Maybe onto some GoW DM? I can then show you a good play

Familiar to many games that I can't put my finger on it but loosely say for example MGS, Quake, Doom, Syphon Filter and the list goes on... basically a cocktail of things.

    Yes I own a 360.

Take a look at the thread I put up for why we should have keyboard/mouse combos for the 360, I gave reasoning there and a lot of it really is self explanatory so needs no further justification (this is a tech site after all). Trolling according to wiki:

intentionally tries to cause disruption, most often in the form of posting inflammatory, off-topic, insulting, or otherwise inappropriate messages.
So I don't think by not necessarily justifying everything I say constitutes trolling. If it was business I would go the extra mile and explain it in an idiot proof way but I like to think people don't need that here since it's casual is it not? I actively participated in the thread I mention above (although I don't see how this is a must since it's open discussion). I have no reason to up my post count so it's not an issue. But thanks for teaching me these unwritten rules, I'll take them as gospel with a pinch of salt and throw my mba in the garbage can. See you on the battlefield

See Al, there we go its not too hard is it I agree, it does share some of the basic gameplay elements of the games you mention (although I havent played syphon filter), but I think it takes them all to another level.

Seriously though Al, we need to take this onto live. Have you added yourself to the live leaderboard? If not do so!

Re-reading my post above it comes across a little harsher than it was meant to be...... I just wanted to know what games you thought it felt like I cant speak for everyone else, but I'm only playing with you So take my posts as some friendly beef.
