    Ps3 question

Is the PS3 region free for games and not blu-ray?

Seems to be conflicting news around the net.

I.e could you buy a PS3 in Japan and get UK games for it?

    Its a joke...

The PS3 is region free but its now illegal to import sony products... if you can get around this then yes its the games that are region free but the blu-ray isnt.

How strange, so you could buy all of your ps3 games now from the US? and use them on your PAl PS3? But Blu-ray movies don't work? I'm confused as there seems to be conflicting stories everywhere.

The PSP was region locked for the movies and not the games so maybe it will be the same on the PS3

    When i said blu-ray i ment movies

Basicly i think the PS3 just looks at what the thing you put into it is coded to. The movie side will be Region 2 but all games will just be un-regioned so the PS3 couldnt care less... thats what im thinking.

But as i said in my 1st post its illegal to import them anyway so what does it matter?

Surely we'll at least be able to import games from Japan and the US? I thought it was only illegal to import the PS3 itself because of "differing hardware standards" or however they phrased it.

That's what I was thinking, games are much cheaper overseas.

After a bit more research it seems it is only hardware they can get away with because of the way they won the law suite... Its only a matter of time

Games: Not region coded, therefore, in theory, can play any game from anywhere
Blu-Ray: Region coded: America+Japan; Europe+Africa; wont be able to play region coded blu-ray discs

Its illegal to import a PS3, but if you bought one over there and put it in a case as a personal purchase that'd be ok right?

And the games are defintely region free?

Steven - are you getting the "man" thats in HK to pick one up for you as well then?

as far as i know the lawsuit was about "trade marks, copyright and registered design rights"

The whole harware thing was just a reason for them doing it.
But yeah should be fine bringing one back, just be carefull at customs if he intends to bring a few back..

tbh if he's bringing a few back he's illegally smuggling goods into the uk (unless he declares them, pays import tax and vat) and could be liable for a prison sentance.

My Japanese PS3 plays both American and Japanese Games.
It will only play region 1/A Blu-Ray titles.
It will only play NTSC Region 2 DVD's (It displays an error message on PAL R2 discs)
It will only play Japanese PS2 and PS1 discs.

It's not illegal for an individual to personally import a PS3 - there is no duty to pay, only VAT.
Nor is it illegal for an individual to buy a PS3 from a foreign website (It may be unlawful for a company to import Sony products into specific regions without Sony's consent)

The "Sharper" discs thing is utter BS - I've got sharper UK retail CD's than the PS3 game discs.

I just bought Motorstorm for the PS3 for £23 including shipping..

    Any more questions?

Yes, how much did you pay for the PS3 if you don't mind me asking?

Enough, but nowhere near as much as some

But if you look around they can be had for around the £400-500 mark for the 60GB version
