    Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo offers nothing new to the genre in anyway. Anything which Halo has implemented here has already been done better by a myriad of other games. The only new thing Halo has is the ability to bore, frustrate and irritate all the same time. If you get this for Christmas, take it back without opening the wrapper, trust me, your sanity will thank you for it later.

It says on the back of the box to "Unleash destruction with incredible new weapons", I dread to think how crap the old ones were.

There... proof positive that it's perfectly possible to get a Hexus rating of 3.

Remember, if we can be that brutal, the kit we review really must be good!

I've got to say, after mucking about with the demo, I can only echo this review - but I couldn't have put it half so well, or half so amusingly. This review may well prove to be the only good reason for the Halo PC version being released at all...top marks!

Nice review but I disagree with most of the points other than the graphics engine not being optimised and some of the levels being repetitive. The story was good, the two weapons worked well, the recharging shield concept makes taking cover in a fight a far more useful option and the vehicles are quite simply brilliant.

    It's all subjective though

The story was in essence ripped from an Iain M Banks short story, the concept of a Halo ringworld certainly came from there. The whole aliens wiping us out and then more dangerous aliens coming along and wiping us and our enemies out has been done to death.. Wing Commander, Homeworld, Conflict Freespace2...

The two weapon system does work, sure, but there are only eight weapons in the game, Unreal 2 gives you five different types of grenade.... nevermind alternate fire modes on all the other weapons. For the (needlessly) large levels, more variation was needed.

The shield recharge was too rapid for my liking, not really making a tactical difference, but that is purely personal opinion and so I didn't mention it.

The vehicles added variety and were attractive as a quicker way to get around than plodding along at dawdle speed. Sadly though, the control of the jeep was crying out for straight forward arrow keys like Mafia. Why couldn't it have been an option? It was a time warp back to Quake Rally. The tank worked fine tho.

The Ghost suffered dreadful clipping issues, being able to fly through scenery if you go slow enough... that just reaks of sloppy programming. Couple that with the sound problems and the poor level design and I can't help but think that certain people new they were either rushing this for a pre-Chrimbo release to beat the vastly superior competition, or they just could not be bothered to sort it out.

That said, I know TiG LOVES this game.

I honestly gave this game my best shot.. I even played it right through to the very end and sat there and watched the end sequence... (by the way, the escape ship... looks a lot like the towing ship Nostromo in the orignal Alien filmm, don't it?)

Compared with its contempories, Halo just doesn't cut the mustard...or the mayonaisse...

not what he said last night

Had it been released 2 years ago then I think people would have had a different point of view , but it wasn't and life has moved on since
