    Sony further destroys their rep

    http://www.alliwantforxmasisapsp.com/blog/

Its sad how poorly sony think of their target audience that they think we would fall for a fault site like this.

It amazes me how a company who just 10 years ago could do no wrong seem to be messing everything up so spectactularly

All I get is a rubbishy page about someone wanting a PSP? Am I missing something?!

10 years ago they had MiniDisc, Sony will continue to take the risks on these technologies as quite often the lessons learned can be replayed on other systems. The PS3 will work in the end in the wider market despite the fanboy view of the company failing.

Yup, and it'll establish blue-ray as the technology of choice, and they'll make a mint from royalties and game subs for years. They play a risky game but they'll play it well and make lots of dosh from it.

    It's called marketing..

It's been done by a marketing firm called Zipatoni, nothing new, lots of companies have done it before, but yep, as soon as Sony do it, they're accused of everything under the sun. *yawn*

.. that's just some random persons blog isn't it?

Minidiscs are still in use fairly widely by the music industry - recording wise - for instance, if you take AS music, the examiners will want your performances recorded (preferrably) on minidisc.

Plus, they are extremely underrated - the player battery life lasts for weeks, the discs can hold enough music in mp3 format (more than an mp3 cd afaik) and they have superb sound quality.

minidisks don't hold that much data - 200odd megs i think?? but they were vastly successful until mp3 took over - in japan they sold billions, and the players themselvs were generally of much better quality than mp3 players are - all that lovely brushed aluminium makes me go funny inside

i don't think sony's rep is actually as bad as this forum makes out. sure to the geek who follows every eb from their marketing department.. but to be fair, they've had one major cockup, and that was with availability of hardware. *no-one* has got this right this-generation, not ms, not the goldenballs ninty, no-one. the console is expensive, but they know what they're doing far far better than someone sitting on a forum who spends thousands on pc parts every year.. time to give em a break imo.

I know it's normal for people to say "well you're talking about it, so it must be doing it's job", but that just doesn't apply here. Even as viral marketing this is rubbish, and it seems foolishly insulting to their own fans (unless it's a sneer at that format of advertising. Or at their own fans. That would make it quite funny.)

    Its catching that yawn....*yawn*

And hang-on people I didn't say Mini-Disc wasn't successful, it was very successful in the music industry and in Japan. Its just an example of them taking a risk on their licensed technologies because as from oft quoted Betamax line it doesn't always work but it often does.

Even then the betamax line is bunkum, sure, it's not a successful public technology, but it morphed and developed into a highly successful format in the professional and broadcast industry, and later became the defacto standard - Betacam.

What else was Sony involved in the creation of?

Oh yes, the Compact Disc (joint venture with Philips), and they were also highly instrumental in the creation of the DVD format (again with Philips, and this time Toshiba)..

The only one that hasn't really gone anywhere is UMD, but that's not really any worse than any of the other myriad formats of past games machines.

Sony wouldn't get any more of my money if they were the last company on earth. Their support and after sales service has been, for me, absolutely appalling!

    I detest them for it.

I had a Sony Laptop break (weird screen/software issue), and after 2 failed repair attempts got a new one. OK, that wasn't perfect, but they sent someone to my home to fix it twice, second time they gave me a bag to ship it to sony with when they couldn't fix it again. Shipped me a new one with all my files on it (they'd already replaced motherboard and screen, when it came back it had a new case too).

With such a big company each department would probably be quite different, so hard to say really.
