    Balls!

No doubt about it....best thing I've done this gaming year...is to buy myself an old style ball mouse!

I've neen noticing that Optical mice occassionally shoot up the screen, or across the screen. It happens in normal wondows desktop apps, and occassionally in games my charcter ends up looking at the ceiling ! or the view changes in Lineage.

I've had 3 opticals to test.....Logitech, Microsoft and a cheapo one.

So I bought myself a Microsoft
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...ProductID=6065
fron Scan, and once it was plugged in, went into Mouse properties and nocked the old sensopr thingy up to 200.

And this mouse has just vastly improved my accuracy in FEAR

So there.....try an old style (but new) ball mouse occassionaly, you might be suprised!

Thats great until it gets clogged

Those older Razer Mice, weren't they ball style, but used an optical sensor to measure the movement? That would be the best idea

I absolutely hate ball mice now, I'll never go back. I'm surprised you have that problem with optical mice. I'm guessing it's to do with the surface you're using it on.

Yeah nice move, but only for like a week. You'll have to keep cleaning it out...

I've had my Microsoft Intelli Explorer 3 for years now and its never skipped.

That said, the Electronics department PC's at uni use the same mouse and they skip all the time (it's really annoying) so I think half the battle is a good surface (I've got a DKT mat and its great)

My optical mouse does the same thing also. I do believe it is the surface like mentioned.

I have a razer copperhead and have had a mx518 in the past neither had problems with skipping, I also used a plain old Microsoft optical and no problems.

I use a razer exact mat

My company kindly gives out lots of free mouse mats to visitors and occasionally to staff to advertise staff, thye are just customised 'Brite Mat' products for use with optical mice, never had a problem, the surface is key really, anything shiny and laser and optical mice struggle to cope.

frankly, i have mice, all of em, and dont know how i ever used em.

my logitech trackball is a godsend (well, ok, not really, im atheist after all) no RSI, no skipping, and less effort because all you have to move is your fingers....

shame that i only know of two decent ones currently produced, both by logitech.

I have found that, if your balls do become soiled, simply pop them out and rinse them under a warm tap.

I've never had a real mouse surface. I once had a superb plastic chopping board, from Sainsbury's but it got damaged while I chopped something on it, and never found a good one again!

I read the mouse article....it's ace, but this ball is gonna get cleaned weekly. It's really much better than my other sub £10 opticals.

Once...long ago, I had a mouse cleaning gadget. It was a plastic ball, shaped like a gold ball, all pock-marked, on a rod. It came free with a magazing years ago. You dropped the mouse ball out, and put this in and twiddled it between your fingers.

    BUT I CANT FIND IT

Anyone know where I can get one?

I have a Razer Copperhead on a Razer Mantis Control pad and it spazzes out all too often, you would think they'd make a good surface for their own mice . Microsoft Intellimouse Optical has been the best so far, worked great on any surface I tried.. whatever happens I could never play with someones balls again!
