    Steam Game Backup ?

bit of a newbie to the world of steam etc.......but

I recently purchased 'Day of Defeat' direct from steam and setup an account.

now obvioulsy they didnt send me a keycode or anything to reinstall the program.

but within steam you can backup your game program files. if I made a backup to a disk would this allow me to reinstall with all licenses etc to be up and running after a format of my hardrive?

    hope that makes sense

    thanks

Once you have a Steam account associated with your purchase you can re-download the program via Steam after a format - this is kinda your "failsafe" if the backup option doesn't work (which it should do these days - was flaky to start with though)

Essentially the license is associated at their end with your Steamaccount, so if you install Steam and sign in with your account details you'll be sorted.

Yeah it should work fine. I reinstalled Steam a few weeks back when I bought Dark Messiah, after the installation and it updated etc it still had HL2 under the my games bit even though I no longer have that installed.

steam backup has never worked for me, tried 3 times

just save your config.cfg file, and also autobuy fles etc, depending on the game.

Steam backup sucks but you can re-download no problems

I just copy the whole folder and keep one as a backup which always works

what you can do is backup your SteamApps folder (just copy the whole folder to a backup hdd or whatever) then after format, install Steam, close it down and then paste the old SteamApps folder over the new one. Hey presto, all your games are there, and you keep your config files

Ahh does that work? I always assumed there would be some registry changes during install that would need a reinstall. Excellent

The only things connected to the registry (if any) is the actual steam program itself. Any game that steam uses can just be copied into the steam folder.

I've tried steam backup once on my last format, and it seemed to work fine, except it took ages to compress/decompress. For this reason, I think you should just copy your steam folder when you want to reformat. There's no point in making a backup now, if you're not going to be formatting for a while yet as you'll still have to download the updates for the game again anyway, so you might as well have re-downloaded the whole thing.
