Wii - when should we expect better stock levels?

    Hi all,
It was my birthday yesterday, and my wonderful fiancé tried to get my a Wii. However, she couldn't find any in-stock.

I know they are the latest thing out and with it being Christmas, stock is bound to be limited - but, when do you think we will see normal-ish stock levels so I can get my grubby mits on one?

    Cheers,
    Matt

I would say there will be an initial rush again in early January after more people have had a go (family and friends), plus existing pre-orders still to be fulfilled and more people shopping in general.

I think you are looking at mid-January I think but I could be wrong.

Let us know how you get on since there is others on here would like a Wii too.

Another factor for this time of year is the poor logistics in getting units to stores. I was in Gamestation yesterday and picked up a DS and three games. They didn't have a huge selection because of the sales and lack of deliveries.

There could well be thousands of Wii waiting on customs clearance for example.

Ah, I guess that could make sense. There could well be replenished stocks by the end of next week perhaps then?

Another question whilst we're on the subject - surely Nintendo could predict how popular the Wii was going to be. If so, do you think they purposefully held back on shipping out stock to create hightened demand, or could they really not manufacture enough units to send across? I favour the first option personally.

It's possible there will be more stock by the end of the week, but that's just speculation. I have no concrete proof of this

That's the problem with big global launches these days. Nintendo wouldn't have to contract in larger manufacturing capacity just for the UK launch, this would erode their profit margin on each console. So there probably was a genuine limit of how many they could distribute on release. They also wouldn't want to starve their distribution channels in other countries either, so not all their supply can come here.

I'm sure no-one with disagree that a little demand is good for business. We are used to popular consoles being scarce for the first couple of months, so if the Wii was in plentiful supply, it would be perceived as less of a success. Also too many units in distribution and people start to want to discount them, this can also have a negative effect on a release.

It is a pretty hard balance to get right, especially with the volumes you are talking about these days. Not like in the old Nintendo days when the number of consoles sold on day one were a fraction of what they are now.

I think it's fair to say they estimated it from the fact they have already shipped 3+ million consoles, considering it's been out for 1-2 months that's a crazy amount. They can't really be accused of holding back stock, PS3 hasn't even hit half a million yet..?

Really? I didn't think it would be anywhere near that many! Surely that must make it one of the most sucessful console launches ever?

I guess I will have to wait in line - gives me time to acquire a new LCD TV to play it on anyhow

I think Nintendo just deliver their stock to the customer (ie GameStation and Currys etc), it is their interest to deliver it further. There has been much written about poor delivery schedules but the fact is alot of companies including DSGi have made promises to customers that couldn't be kept and have led people (ableit gently) to believe Nintendo were at fault.

Customs would only have a small part to play in this and this part of the process Nintendo has no power over. They are also a small law unto themselves but usually operate pretty efficently.

I dont think stock will be widely available and consistently in stock until early February. There are still pre-prders to be fulfilled and many many people hunting online and in stores.

I was lucky enough to order 3 and got them all delivered from amazon.co.uk on 23rd December - just in time for xmas

Yeah I think it is. At least in Europe.

Personally, I'm going to wait until their easily available which will probably Feb/march time I reckon. If I wait till March time they might have come down in price a little to co-inside with the theorized PS3 Europe launch.

I wouldn't expect to see a price drop that early in the product lifecycle for Wii especially if it is not selling out, if demand is there at full strength then I would think they will leave the price the same to recoup costs and make max profit per console.

Also I don't think the PS3 release will have any effect on Wii prices since Nintendo have already stated they are going for a different market and have set an initial price accordingly.

Looking back it was a along time between release and price drops on any console, at least a year so I think 3 months would be pushing it.

The price woudn't need to drop anyway, it's already a full £100 less than the 360 premium and god knows hoe much cheaper than the PS3 will be, £200 cheaper at the very least.

It's also a very unique console, it's in a different class to the 360 and PS3.

That would be why 33 odd million people bought it then!

But I do hope Wii drops in price soon.
Once the initial rush is over anyway

It wasnt awful. It was profitable but it just wasnt as popular as the Playstation.

Some of the best games ever made were available only on the N64 and thats what makes it a great console.

Getting back on topic, Wii stock will probably be more widely available by the end of the month when the insane level of demand has died down a bit
