It's pretty unfair to be comparing the number of X360s to the Wii, too; the latter was released last month, whilst the other was released last year. It's pretty unsurprising they've sold more consoles given that people haven't had a choice until now.

actually, the interest in that figure is entirely BECAUSE of the time gap

how long did it take for the 360 to sell as many units as the wii's sold in a month? at current rates (a dangerous way to start a sentance) how long until it's been outsold?

Well, if it's any indication, my wife - whose gaming, console or PC, has to date been non-existent - had a go on a Wii yesterday and now wants one. Badly. On that basis, I think it'll probably outsell bog roll in a couple of months...

It's true, a lot of non-gamers do seem to want one. In a similar fashion Home Cinema fanatics will probably want a PS3 for the Blu-Ray capabilities etc (though obviously much more limited niche). I'll aim to have all 3 in due course, then just worry about the games .

I agree with the Blue-Ray thing and with the non-gamers thing. Hard to tell right now but I see the 360 being overtaken sooner or later, no matter how much I think it deserves to be top dog

I dont think the 360 will be overtaken, certainly not by the ps3 thats for sure. i feel that the ps3 could fail due to this blue ray format and lack of exclusive titles too. MGS may make its way to the 360 and if that happens, im sure all the final fantasy's and devil may cry games could eventualy end up on the 360.

the blue ray thing can easily end up in the same fate has umd/mini disk/ betamax.

if so i doubt ps3 has what it takes to out do 360 which has tons of games already out..

graphics wise, the ps3 is not that much better than a 360 as reported from various sources. Serious though, what else does the PS3 have over a 360?

I can understand why a wii may beat the 360, because it has a totaly different approach to gaming and is very innovative but the ps3? sorry i just dont see the ps3 outdoing the 360.

I am in no doubt whatsoever that the Wii will outsell the Xbox360 within a year.
Why?
Price and they are bloody good fun, even for non gamers. Everyone I know wants one including people that aren;t interested in games normally!
The PS3, I'm not su sure about. It might or it might not. I hope it flops but doubt it will.

you're missing the fact that sony has japan, and microsoft doesn't

the lack of japanese sales will make a significant dent on microsoft's figures, once ps3 production ramps up

I was quite surprised to hear that a recent ltd edition 360 sold out of it's 50,000 stock in a week !

Of course the PS3 will pi$$ all over that, but Japan gamers were bored of waiting for the PS3 and so took the plunge. I think they'll be more 360 gamers there before the next gen battle is over.

Having said that, I'm thinking of trading my 360 for a wii

Sales figures are not about which product is better, they are about markets and marketing. Sony will still sell lots of PS3's and will eventually catch up with the Xbox360 for a number of reasons, none of which have much to do with actually having a better console - and tbh I still don't think there is much between the two except the blu-ray and price - soon Sony will catch up with games/content, Xbox will have HD-DVD, PS3 will drop in price, and then it'll be PS2 and Xbox all over again... marketing and markets.

However the Wii has the potential to grab the non-gamer market which is a hell of a lot bigger than what Sony and Microsoft have to share, so Wii will probably end up as common as the PS2 soon.
