Any Q's for 'Another World' game designer?

We have an interview coming up with Eric Chachi, lead designer on Another World. The game is being re-released this year to celebrate it's 15th anniversary.

He's known for his forthright views on the gaming industry.

Has anyone ever played Another World? If so, what made it so great?

is this the one that was linked to a few weeks ago as downloadable for free?

i guess to be honest the thing that made it stand out for me was that i hadnt played anything like it before. i was pretty damn young at the time but i remember it being stupidly difficult

What aren't games designers making enough of, and what are they making too much of?

I'm downloading it now, seems many people absolutely loved it. Apparently you can get through it in 45 mins though.

It was called Out of this World in the US.

Unfortunately, I've not played the game but I would be interested to hear what he thinks of the effect of consoles on PC games. Most people I know are grumbling that PC games are being 'dumbed down.'

I don't actually have a strong opinion on this as I don't play that many games and don't own a console but what I have heard from others who play more than me does bother me.

What was your name for the alien friend? (I remember using a PCFormat guide that just referred to him as 'Dave')

And why was the sequel Mega-CD only?

And thanks for such a great and unique experience. Pressing ALL THE BUTTONS in the tank was super-fun.

That download is only a trial. Seems pretty creative for such an old game.

It cost £5 for the full version.

How did they get round the limitations of the hardware when the game was first released on the Commodore Amiga. The animation was so fluent it was amazing. The follow on Flashback was equally as good as was the origional Prince of Persia.

How exactly did the animators do it ?

    Rotoscoping!

    Edit:
Chahi used an Amiga 500 to create the final game, using Devpac Assembler to program the game engine and polygon outlines and GFA BASIC to create the game's editor. Using a genlock, he imported recordings of his little brother from a video camera to use for rotoscoping animations. He used a tape recorder to record the sound effects for the game. He drew the background art with Deluxe Paint.[2] The game is the first 2D game to use polygons for all of its graphics, as opposed to the more common sprites, which created a distinctive visual style. It took advantage of the computer hardware at that time to display full-screen animation (Amiga 500 and Atari ST were 68000 based, PC AT machines would have been 80286).

Another World was fantastic - in the truest meaning of the word.

I still remember the credits music fondly, but the whole universe setting, the graphics, and the sheer art made it an amazing game.

Flashback was ok, but became more of a platformer and lacked the same art direction IMO.

Q: Could a game like Another World be made in today's market environment?

Q: How do you create a new game setting?

    Q: Which is better, X360 or PS3?

Q: Has piracy more or less killed the PC games market?

So, is this game of a comparable style to, say, DOTT?

To be honest, no. It was a time for computer games when most good titles could be considered 'landmark' by today's standards, but I don't think it was, unless you want to hail the introduction of polygonal graphics. Actually even that's misleading - Elite on the BBC etc. used polygonal graphics, AW was the first time they'd been used in this capacity.
edit: Doh That was a Q for the designer wasn't it...

Not really. DOTT was an adventure game which wasn't real time - it was more puzzle solving. AW is a combat platform game at heart, however you had to execute a number of combinations/move-timings to get past various scenarios. It was very much real time and reflex based in parts.

nah I wouldnt say DOTT that much... hmmm,

It's a platform game (with puzzle elements). I'd say it is to mario what rainbow six is to doom.

I remember when I first played it, very atmospheric (the monster following you in the background during the first scene). I think the fact it was polygon based kinda added to this, you made of the characters what you wanted.

I loved this game. Bought ot for about £30 on the PC, when I was playing it on my 386.

No questions I'm afraid, but was one of the games that kept me going back again and again.

With the cult status of this game, it's strange that the developer has done little else since.
