    Question Morrowind Combat prob

Not sure if its a prob or not but my attacks are all the same. When playing Oblivion or Dark Messiah moving side to side does a sideways type slash across the body on the horizontal axis. However when I am moving side to side on Morrwind it just seems to be doing the same attack all the time. What looks like a thrust forwards, is it simply all the attacks look the same or is there a problem I am encountering that is only allowing me to do the forward attacks ?

I am only level 2 however with just starting out on the game, just headed to the Egg Mine (2nd Fighters Guild quest). Do you get the extra attacks as you become more powerful or what. I've looked in the manual and followed what it says for the different attacks but it seems to do nothing ?

Have you definitely unchecked 'use best attack' in the options?

In morrowind there are only 3 attacks you can do, but I can't remember what they're all called.

Each weapon type suits one sort of attack better. It is better to slash someone with a sword, or hit someone with a hammer etc.

As kalniel says, there is an option for morrowind to make you automatically use the best attack for each weapon you equip. Other than that, I think it does depend on how you move when attacking.

Choose what sort of difficulty you want to play, and keep the box checked or not. Morrowind combat system was fairly basic, but oblivion enhanced it at the expense of depth elsewhere.

Well you can do a chop downwards a sideways slash and a thrust but they do different damages. An axe is better with a chop for example. If you have always use best attack on in the option it will always use the weapons best damage attack.

TBH the combat in Morrowind is so dull that adding the more attack options doesn't really add much to it. Combat really isn't Morrowinds strongest feature, and is more focused on the adventuring and exploring than the combat side. Oblivion improved it a bit making combat more dynamic but they really killed the game in terms of the adventuring IMO.

Now Morrowind crossed with Dark Messiah would be awesome.

Reason why I asked is that with it just doing the forward cut type attack is that it makes it difficult straffing and slashing. When I reachd the 2 guys in the mine I was killed pretty quick as it only seemed to do the one attack and kept missing.

I think it could well be the best attack option, will take a look for that one in the options tonight.

    Cheers guys

edit : It was a checked best attack option doing it, now have the few different attacks making combat a little easier. Must admit though it does feel like you are floating whilst fighting, also how close you actually have to be to hit the target. Can't seem to find the Caldera Ebony mines now and I was attacked by a flying creature that I couldn't hit as I have no bow and my magical ability to throw fireballs is poor to say the least. Must admit though I have actually quite taken to the game, feels like I am being drawn in by it ! Will be playing this now until they fix Dark Mess(iah) ! Keeps crashing out in one form or another when I go through the red portal door at the start of Chapter 8, damned annoying to say the least as it hasn't crashed for a good few levels now. Must admit the medium GFX setting has helped no end with the crashing but I just can't seem to go any further at the min.

Either way I do like Morrowind, big difference in the way it feels and looks compared to Oblivion. It has been out a few years though, graphically it looks a bit bland with the textures etc but gameplay is great.

Well why not spruce up the graphics with a couple of better textures/trees etc. mods?

Forgot to say, cliff racers are BLOOMING ANNOYING

If you can't hit them take a few steps back and they'll fly down a bit more so you can.

Personally I modded morrowind with a simple ai fix for cliff racers. It's very easy to do with the included mod tools.

Just change the "attack the player" type setting from 90 to 15. They still attack you sometimes, but aren't a permanent annoyance.

Started looking into the mods now. Currently downloading Vibrant Morrowind version 3 as it seems to be a big hit with everyone. Covers literally everything from the sky, buildings, grass and what not. Hopefully it will cover some of the characters also as the facial features look quite minimal.

The Cliff Racer kept chasing me about and I just couldn't hit it at all, I walked backwards and when it swooped tried to hit it, unfortunately it was to fast and got the better of me !

Will look into the A.I tweaks and the tweak for the Cliff Racer. Pity there isn't a way to load the .esm file for Morrowind into the Oblivion engine. Now that would be awesome.

I loaded the Morrowind .esm file into the construction set and found the Cliff Racers and made the changes. I had to save it as an .esp data file. Is that right for it ? I have activated it in the data fles on the autorun, hopefully that will be the Cliff Racers down to 15 aggression !

BTW, if you have your mouse cursor over the target and you're in range of it, clicking on it will attack it, the combat is completely different to Oblivion, it's more based on D&D dice roll type stuff, so even if it looks like you hit them, you might not hit them, it has nothing to do with where the sword actually goes, unlike on Oblivion and Dark Messiah.

If you find you can hit anything, then you're probably using the wrong weapon, only use the weapon type you have a high skill with.

Correct - esm stands for elder scrolls master file, esp is plugin file.
