    Steam error after upgrading

Just connected to steam and it downloaded an update. Now I get this:

"Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam Engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e890) failed with error 200: Connection Reset, WinSock Error 10054 "Connection reset by peer""

It used to work fine...any ideas?

Its an error on their end. And cause they suck, they haven't fixed it. You can try deleting the clientregistry.blob in your cstrike folder, or if that doesn't work, reinstalling it might help. It happened to my clanmate and after he reinstalled he finally got it to work after several attempts to load it up.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i had this problem 2 days ago when Steam updated to a new GUI, you need to let Windows relearn its Firewall Exceptions.. i.e. removing all exceptions related to Steam, HL or HL2, then let it relearn it again by asking you when Steam tries to access the internet.

Also, you will have to reset your router or if you already made an exception on your router program port list, you'd have to remove it, and reconfigure it again.

    Simple as that..

After that, get a restart on your computer (and your router, for me its just power off and power on) and it *fingers crossed* should work..

    Mine did..

    * I dont think there's any need to reinstall, its just a connection problem with firewalls and stuff, nothing major.. *

Top explaination. It was the GUI update (hadn't loaded steam for a few days) which seems to have made windows/router block it or something. A restart of router+computer fixed it.

God i HATE steam, they way it works and just in principle too.

Another thing, often when i load steam all the games say "Pre-load complete" (rather than Ready). When i try and run them i am just sent to the page to buy the game. I have the retail DVD FFS, i don't need to pay for it again thanks! I often have to close and restart steam a few times until they all say "100% Ready", and it seems to take forever to close/restart it

    Sorry you're having problems.

I actually really love Steam and the way it works. The fact you can get hold of games cheaply is great - the way you can try demos of most of them first is even better. If they added some radio channels and possible some TV I'd be even happier

Bah serves you right for buying retails. if you just buy through steam it's no hassle at all. Steam is the future and the fact more and more developers are releasing through steam will make it stronger. There are a few problems with it at times but all in all it's a great idea and a good way of stopping people downloading games illgeally.

Servers us right? For buying a game in the way i and most people have been for years in an established format?

I don't have a problem with systems like Steam being used in conjunction with more tradition systems, but it should not have complete control and management of my games. When steam plays up, so does ALL your stream games.

One other thing which you are too ignorant to see - 30% of internet users in the UK still don't have broadband. And before you say serves you right again, they don't have a choice. In some countries it's even worse. I am in a battle with BT right now to get a stable connection faster than 130kbps.

Idiot. "Works great for me, so sod everyone else", yeah we know.
