Is it the Card or the Game?

    Dear all,

I recently purchased a game by the name of Crysis Warhead. Installed and booted the beast. Put all setting to 'Enthusiastic', and began to play...

Upon starting the first level, a horrendous noise began to emanate from what believe to be my graphics card. I have a BFG GT8800, which runs Fallout 3, The Witcher, on full graphical settings without a hitch i.e. the fans on the card don’t go a blaring! I just can’t for the life of me understand why the speed on my graphics card fan increases to super speed levels when I play Crysis Warhead (even when I turn down the graphical settings. This phenomenon is also exhibited when I play the Brother in Arms games.
I find this quite unnerving as I don’t want anything detrimental happenings to my card.

Any insight from ye good ole folk would be greatly appreciated.

Mke sure motherboard and VGA card drivers are up to date first off. Then check for patches for the game.

Hmm, not sure about the motherboard bios/drivers, but I have updated the card drivers. Still to no avail.
Could it really be due to motherboard firmware being out of date?

In the graphics card control panel, is the fan control for the card on manual or auto? It may be the game is overriding this setting.

I haven't had a look at that as of yet. Heckl, I didn't even know that the option even existed or knew that applications have the power to control Graphics fan speed. I'll check and get back y'all. Thx for the help.

Yeah reckon it's the fan speed increasing. Checkout Nvidia's system tools and or Riva Tuner. And Crysis Warhead is a killer even for your 8800GT. It's worth disabling the Nvidia Physx in the Control Panel for test purposes. I've found this to be causing my 8800GT some problems in a few games (UT3 mainly).

Re: Is it the Card or the Game?

Install rivatuner and see if you can lower the fan speed and still keep the temp low. My 8800 cranks up to 90-100% if I let it, but with the fan at 50% the temp is exactly the same (55 degrees) but is much quieter.
Do some stress tests and monitor closely though, don't just set it low and load up the game!
