A Wii Review

I've done a little write up of my time with the Nintendo Wii and it's available now if anybody fancies a read: http://www.parmmann.com/2007/01/26/a-wii-review/

Please remember, it's just my opinion and I had only tried the two games and hadn't spent loads of time with it.

Excellent mate, pretty much my opinion on it as well (I've bought 2 and sold them both, after coming to the same conclusion twice).

With the Wii only being used on the occasion when people were visiting, I made the decision to sell the console earlier this month.
    Bang on mate, bang on.

Only thing I'd add is that I feel the Wii is going to be limited by the fact its not got the power it may need to run decent ports of next-gen games that are going to be appearing on 360/PS3. I'd also say that I felt the Wiimote was not as great as many believe, the boxing as you say shows this off completely, developers are going to have to take into account that you can't have too many similar movements on the controller, else it will get confused...

Did you not try Zelda? I found that I wanted to use a Gamecube pad desperately.

I didn't get to try Zelda but I really would have liked to. Unfortunately money is a bit tight right now (another reason it made sense to sell the Wii) but when a spare £40 does pop up, I knew I would have gone for say Crackdown, Rainbow Six, Tony Hawks or something like that instead of Zelda.

However, saying that, I've seen videos lately of Wario and Mortal Kombat on the Wii and now I'm wishing I could try those!

I think you hit the nail on the head there from what I've played of the Wii. But I do, however, like Wii Play. Not all of the games on it mind but a few are good fun and I've played that "spot the miis" game many times as it's always fun to race friends on reactions of finding things like that.

Sounds about right to me too . I won't be selling mine though, it'll sit next to my tv for it's full life span and wake up every now and then.

Personally I see buying games consoles as an investment (hopefully lasting 4-5 years), and after that only need to worry about buying a game now and then and perhaps an accessory .

Good work Parm - this is a great review.

Why oh why doesn't Wii play DVDs or CDs though?! (or have I just got a duff one)

I'm actually quite suprised that most agree!

M0nkeyb0Y, I remember reading that an updated Wii is planned for a later release in Japan, that model can apparantly play DVDs. I can't confirm it, I just remember reading it. It's highly likely that it was just a rumour. As it stands, you don't have a duff one hehehe!

its definitley a multi-player thing. I play Rayman and Wii Sports with my friends most weekends, i am looking forward to more single players too.

They will definitley need to abandon the port concept unless they are serious about embracing the differences which they continue to tell us they are so whether it really happens I don't know.

I think the next couple of months look good, Super Paper Mario ill be a hit with me and the girlf. SSX Blur should be good with me and friend, does it have a half pipe mode? Yeah there is no 'killer apps' cry the other console fans, but really I just don't expect that so close to release.

I would think a Demo Channel would go down a treat too.

I think that the points that you make are good ones and its also (To me anyway) that the fact that you have an Xbox 360 that has raised your expectation of what is expected from a console (in terms of media streaming, connectivity to PC, graphics and sound).

Personally, I use my PC for my main gaming rig, even now for what used to be my last console reserve, football gaming with a mate (Thanks to PES6 and decent controllers). All the points you make are right, and if anyone is thinking of using this for their main gaming rig, then it might not be the best choice IMO. The success of the Wii depends on whether or not developers get to grips with the new control mechanics and to be honest, thats not going to happen without a few mistakes first. If I want all the things that you mention, then my PC does fine...

...Anyone reading this probably thinks that i am a bit of a Wii hater, but its difficult for me to really explain my experience. I didnt get the Wii because i thought all the games would be great, but because it offers me something that my PC cant give me - and thats my favourite franchise. The sole reason for getting the Wii was just for Zelda, full stop. Nothing on the PC can come close to this sort of game, and thats why i was happy to get it, because its wonderful.

Of course, as you say its decent for local multiplayer but in terms of single player games, I'm not sure that the Wii is going to deliver anytime soon. But when it does, then I'll be there to get them!!!

I'll agree about there not being an awful lot of memorable single player games on the Wii... yet. But I've probably played Wii Sports single player more than any other game in the past couple of years. Maybe it's because I'm a big sports fan, or maybe it's just because I'm easily entertained (or shallow )but I'm more than happy so far.

Multi-player is obviously Wii's big thing, and is awesome, but I've got a lot of time about the house at the mo so I wouldn't have been happy if it didn't stand up on single player too.

This is the main reason I'm keeping my wii - it's just so much gosh darn fun: Sure it's less involving than playing HL2 or Civilization 4 on my PC, but the wiimote makes pissed up wii tennis a treat!

I think I agree with a lot of points

    Where I disagree:

I thoroughly enjoy playing the Wii on my own, Rayman is awesome and CodD 3 is great too. Wii sports fitness and the multitude of other smaller gamer on virtual console keep me amused no end. Plus the missus plays it no end too.

That is one thing missing - yes it's awesome multi-player (ok I live with my fiancee), but she actually plays it. I mean...she plays on the console. That's amazing to me! Can't believe it even now!

But anyway agree on most of the rest, although I really love my lil Wii

Agreed ! We got it too, saw it for £30 in Tesco when we were doing our grocery shopping and had to have it. Starts off a bit easy and slow but soon builds up !
