Japanese January Sales Figures.

Nintendo DS - 700,000 units.
Nintendo Wii - 405,000 units.
Sony PSP - 230,000 units.
Sony PS3 - 148,000 units.
Sony PS2 - 111,000 units.
Xbox 360 - 40,000 units.

Nintendo also carved up almost the entire top 10 for software sales between their Wii and DS machines as well, with a single PS2 game (GTA) at number 6.

So the Wii is selling like hot cakes, slow start for the PS3... the 360 on the other hand, it started badly, then got worse, and now Microsoft might as well not bother to ship the unit over. They don't even want to play Gears of War.

Anything Microsoft can do to 'crack' the market, short of calling their next console the SEGA 720?

its a shame sega are producing games for other peoples machines now. i like that idea a lot. apart from the 720 bit

Not sure if MS will ever get the share they were always hoping for in this market and Asia in general but I think for now they are happy with their position it seems.

I guess alot will depend on the longer term success of the PS3, I don't think predictions or sales figures mean that much to Sony this early on since they must realise it will take time to justify that kind of outlay for a console. I think at about August 07 we will see how the market it really shaping up. Good to see the Wii doing so well, hope it stays that way since its good to have gameplay over graphics for the first time in around 5 years! Zelda: Twilight Princess is really fun for me at the moment.

40,000 in japan probably is a good figure for ms right now. I'm not surprised at the figures nor do I care, the Japanese have long had a xenophobic attitude toward American brands.

Well to be very honest, their cars have some of the worst build quality ever..

Even a cheap Daihatsu has better build quality than most Dodge or GM cars..

For Japan in this instance, its just the fact that they don't really need MS or American products at all..

On automotive industry, they're miles ahead of any American car company..

On consoles, they have Nintendo.. which IMO is miles better than MS in terms of general fun and playable consoles..

On infrastructure and engineering, they will only need to look up to Germany and no one else..

On people's well-being, well.. I'll just keep quiet.. its not like we're making Americans the world role model for best conduct anytime soon..

It's a completely different market for games over there as well, while theres a big market for both Japanese style games and western style games over in America and Europe, the Japs don't really like the "PC style" games we play. Even though they're trying to cater for Japanese tastes more, with big name JRPG developers signed up, it seems to have made a difference to sales (compared to the original xbox), but not a huge one, probably due to the fact they arn't particularly fond of MS.

and also nintendo did have some more mature titles, the resident evil ones were very good imo.
