    Negative Fanboyism Article

This article was published on Sony's blog, Threespeech.com.

Do you agree that negative fanboyism has become a huge pain in the ass? Look at the 'main' gaming sites - are you happy with the state they're in?

Original article and comments here: http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=276

Negative Fanboyism - time to give it the boot?

It’s human nature to favour the things we admire most in life, whether it’s a particular make of car, a rock band, a certain operating system or a football team. Most of us are fanboys of something or other, even if we don’t always admit it. And there’s nothing really wrong with that. After all, it’s only a positive thing, and something companies fight hardest for - brand loyalty, the holy grail of marketing.

The gaming community has often been the setting for fierce brand loyalty – largely, it has to be said, dictated by sheer economics (let’s be honest, not everyone can afford to own all of the next-gen consoles at the same time). Over recent years, this has turned the market into an increasingly tribal arena, giving birth to what we now see on almost every gaming site you go on, ‘negative fanboyism’.

Where trolling was once an easy-to-spot irritant of community sites, today’s disruptors are somewhat more insidious, sheltering under the guise of ‘genuinely interested’. It may take several posts, but sooner or later, their agenda becomes apparent: to berate a particular system.

Not content with being fans of their preferred system, negative fanboys have an innate desire to continually attack other systems at every given opportunity, albeit under the guise of opinion/concern/interest. Of course by them pretending to be genuinely interested, there’s not much that can be done about it.

Well, not quite. A new generation of gaming websites is beginning to surface, where negative fanboyism is identified, isolated and locked up. This is what I aim to achieve with a new site, www.gamesey.com.

The concept is very simple. The site revolves around the idea of clubs, if you’re a fan of a particular system, you join its club. If not, you don’t. This not only helps prevent the crossover from one system’s fans to another, but makes it much easier to spot negative fanboys.

So will we see more sites that take on board these values? Yes and no.

You see, one thing that negative fanboyism is good for is generating traffic and post counts. Loyal fans can’t help but defend their preferred systems, and sometimes inadvertently end up looking like negative fanboys themselves. This leads others who originally stayed off the thread to get involved to defend their system. And so it perpetuates.

Sadly, many webmasters love it. It means more page impressions, which means more ad impressions, which means more revenue! So don’t expect the major players to put their foot down anytime soon. Ironically, those who are funding this negativity are those being hurt by it the most, the industry itself. (Who else advertises on gaming sites?)

Sooner or later, more will join the ranks and say enough’s enough - we’re sorry, but frankly we have better things to do with our time than get caught up in a tirade that leaves us under a cloud. We want to go on gaming sites to feel good about our chosen hobby, not leave frustrated and annoyed because negative fanboys just keep on attacking our choices or keep dragging us down to their level. So we’ll make a statement, by joining communities which are different, and finally get back to what matters most – games. And how much we love them.

er.. how? You just join all the clubs and carry on. Or are they saying that you are only allowed to have one console ever?

You can join as many clubs as you want - but anyone who acts like a 'negative fanboy', is kicked out of that club ;-)

So if you're a fan you're only allowed to post positive comments?

Well I guess it's an interesting idea if you want to collect praise without any useful criticism.

Its up to the posters and moderators to make a community. It all smells a little of that alliwantforchris.....com website to be honest. After all why else would Sony use their official mouth piece to highlight a new website. Even if it is not theirs then its pretty distasteful to endorse a website as that would surely mean the website is no longer (if it ever was) neutral.

And anyway if I wanted to be preached to then I would go to Church.

    That website doesn't even work.

seams like cheap advertising to me, very thinly vailed at that!

And frankly, fan boys are everywhere its just some can be spotted because they can't properly justify it.

Myself i intend to own a ps3 when they come out, will sit nicely between the wii and xbox360, filling some void thats in my life perhaps. But either way i will vent my anger and hatred of it at all times.

The eayest way to explain what i mean is ReShaper. This is some software i use at work to help me write neato C#, quickly and in a manner that is propper. Its all round great, but regretabbly takes oodles of CPU time and about 0.5gig of memory per VS session.

I love it, and hate it at the same time, perhaps i'm slightly neurotic, but damn skippy i should be allowed to express my hate and my joy in equal measures without having to join a 'club'

It was negative fanboyism from 360 owners incapable of conveying an opinion, that lead to our shiny new Sony\Microsoft\Big N forums.

It’s down to the mods to control anyway. GameFAQs and the like are unusable because of a lack of moderation, as well as 14 year old PS3\360 owners who think 'omfg ur console is sux' is a valid opinion.

I was more than willing to crush the e-testicles of all our own HEXUS negative fanboys, but the new forums option was a more democratic solution to the problem.

However many e-nuts you may crush, these things always happen. Young men like to group along 'tribal' lines eg villages, footy teams,, c64 vs speccy, xbox360 vs ps3. Sad, but human nature!

Aye, but there are already 1,578,649,983 forums on the net where you can scream like a child about your favorite console, and about 3 places where you can find a decent level of discussion.

    So its worth protecting.

All should be well now with t'new forums.

Is that not somewhat ironic? I mean that statement in itself is trying to degrade the opinion of 360 owners and class them all as fanboys, so its a bit fanboyish.

No mate, its just the truth. Sorry but it is.

It got to the point where you couldnt talk about the PS3 on these forums, me and a few other mods had a word about it behind closed forum doors, and the new forums are the result.

I'm sure there are no more 'fanboys' who own 360s than PS3s, but in this case, it was an inability to dicsuss the PS3 that was the problem.

And yes, I am degrading the opinions of 360 owners, not 360 owners in general of course, but specifically the 360 owners who couldnt resist pissing all over any thread in which the PS3 was mentioned, to such an extent we had to make 3 new forums. Most of the stuff written wasn't opinion, it was 'ps3 sux!11!' dressed up slightly.

    Is that more clear?

Interesting that such an article was in a Sony blog as Sony fanboys are by far the worst culprits of fanboyism. It does seem that "fan boys" of brands are becoming an increasing annoyance but at the end of the day fan boy arguments don't sway my opinion, which is derived from actually using a system and playing the games and although i'm yet to commit to a next gen platform i've been very impressed by both the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii whilst the PS3 has yet to really impress me with my limited experiences with the console so far but i'm keeping an open mind on the subject, though £425 is a tad steep!
