Southeners are the intelligent ones. Anything north of Watford is yokel land.

(above is a stereotype, take with added salt.)

The salt shall be poured over my fish and chips fried in beef dripping. And after me grub, i'll put my flat cap on and take the whippet for a walk round God's Own County.

Everyone knows Northerners are drunks and farmers

I think you've selected a well-known town, rather than an acccurate one, as your milestone. Hemel Hempstead is FAR more 'southern' than Watford.

I'd draw the line at Leighton Buzzard

As someone who is Northern, I hate the fake 'professional northerner' schtick that people such as Peter Kay make a living out of. "Eh! Luke at me! Am a Northiner, me! Int that funneh? We dornt do it like in Bol'on, us! Ey, We're dead wacky oop here, us yer know!". To me, that joke got tired very very quickly.

A lot of people take the north/south divide too seriously - as if Geography should have anything to do with personality. Should people be brought up with a sense of how to behave simply because of their latitude?

The problem is that a lot of people like to believe that the North is poor and uncultured, or the south is rich and snobby, but compare somewhere like Alderley Edge with Brixton (just one example, there are many, many more that could be churned out) and anyone with any sense can see that it's complete nonsense.

I think the most important thing to remember here though is that the vast majority of North/South stuff is just harmless banter of course...

(Something I heard a few years ago)

Southerner: Here's £20, go buy yourself a house (cue laughter)
Northerner: Here's £50, go buy yourself a beer (cue laughter)

There are some people out there however (I've met enough of them, believe me) that genuinely think that the people the other side of the Watford Gap are a completely different species and deserve to be reviled at all costs.

I wouldn't go as far to say that it's anywhere near as bad as racism, because it should be plainly evident that it's not (you don't exactly get political organisations set up to 'send Northerners back where they came from' do you?) but some people do go a bit overboard and carry on believing in the stereotypes just so they can be in a gang where they can feel superior over a different group of people.

Anyway "student" - keep us updated on how you go, and let's read it once you've done it

EXACTLY!! I went to Uni in Hull and I met some absolutely quality people from "up north" (I live near watford). Of course there was plenty of banter, but it was all in good spirit and no one ever took it seriously.

There's bound to be cultural differences depending where someone has been brought up(the Tongue and Tong debate was a good one after a few beers) but it's all down to whether you care about where someone was brought up.

It's pretty interesting when you move around the country how things change. My brother lives in Bournemouth and when I go down there, there's definitely a different "vibe". Little more relaxed, perhaps more friendly than around London(not that I'm bashing London or anything).

I think there are a lot of pre-conceptions about the North/South divide, but a lot of this is just down to people who have never ventured more than 50 miles from where they were brought up.
