Ummm...how much is a PS3 going to cost? You can pick up a 360 for about £200, so that plus £120 is still about £100 less than the pre-order price for a PS3.

Then you got yourself 2 pieces of hardware ,when the ps3 will be 1....(who wants a 2 piece dvd player ?)

Fact: It's better to have the choice than have it made for you. If you want a PS3 you're paying over the odds solely for blu-ray...

Betamax was a superior technology though..

in a way so is blu-ray though, it holds more than hd-dvd but i just think people will go with hd-dvd as it has a more familiar name and therefore is more well known already, i honestly believe the reason hddvd will win the format war due to something as silly as that

PS1 for CDs? I don't think PS did anything for CDs as it was already in use on Sega systems long before.

Not sure if DVD success was reliant on PS2 either since its cross format PC/Xbox/PS2/Gamecube.

It was the advent of writeable data CDs that really gave the CD its second lease of life since music made it widely commercially available to consumers in the early 90s.

Blu-Ray however is likely to live or die by the PS3 (or just run alongside like MiniDisc).

You got me wrong the ps1 done quite alot for cd's as did the ps2 when they came out a lot of people had them in their bedrooms etc. and instead of having dvd players in their rooms (cause they still had their combi tv/videos)..

your comment on writeable data disc etc. this IS mostly what makes the media successful..
