    Diabetes

Was diagnosed today after 4 blood tests and a glucose tolerance test, apparently I don't fit the profile for either type so more specialised tests (yay) ahoy.

Any more diabetics on the forum and how does it affect your lives?

Oh and I am 25, fit and healthy with a family history of the disease.

I'm not Diabetic, but I've been Hypoglycaemic since I was about 5.

Little and often is my rule. I struggle a lot in the summer when it's hot as I do tend to burn off glucose faster than I can ingest it sometimes.

My friends and family have got diagnosing my symptoms down to a t... I get white, clammy and disorientated and sometimes just downright cranky if I can't eat on time.

It's good that you've got a diagnosis, let us know how you get on with it. Things like this however small can really make large changes to your lifestyle!

This is what is confusing as I don't feel ill, my Doc sent me off for tests as I was getting recurrent impetigo infections on my face.

I had his rehearsed speech on what it might mean for my long term health but after I told him what I eat (proper, healthy food) and how often I exercise (4-5 times a week for 2-3 hours of cardiovascular intensive martial arts) and with my resting heart rate @ 54bpm he agrees that making lifestyle changes won't make much difference.

He isn't keen on putting me on medication hence the referral to a diabetes specialist.

im diabetec, been since i was 2 (im 17 now) the problem is i hate needles and since my parents did it for me when i was younger i hate doing it me self so have a slight problem going out and doing it my right arm (only place i can do it myself:S)

im also crap scared of blood tests aswell... and hate needles so me n diabetes dotn really mix well :/

its a bit of a kick in the balls tbh, you cant eat loads of haribo without gettin ketones

tho i dont check my blood so you could probly say i dont care bout it (which is pretty awful) but its just annoying, plus ive done it loads of times! doctor and parents shout at em tho lol

you also gotta remeber to take ur insulin when ur going out or staying out which is a annoying little bugger!

have u seen the asthma type pump there bringing out by any chance? you cant get them on NHS (they cost too much) unless ur needle phobic or u will really bennfit from it iirc.. looks promising though.

As yet I don't know if I need to take insulin or not, I have a specialist appointment in a couple of weeks to sort all that out.

I don't mind needles in the slightest.

The worst bit of the appointment was the Dr explaining how it can cause erectile dysfunction with my mum sitting next to me.

High levels of glucose in the blood break down the small blood vessels, this in turn can damage the nerves which make up the autonomic nervous system, the part of your nervous system you have no control over and in blokes this tends to manifest in your little soldier being unwilling to go into battle as it were.

However much of a hassle it may seem now, don't ignore your diabetes. It can seem a chore as a teenager to be dealing with this, but 20 years down the line you regret poor control. I have seem too many diabetics later in life (30 to 40 years old) with untold problems because they don't look after their diabetes.
    Not around too often!

I'd imagine that medication in the form of pills is more likely than injected insulin to start with. People would normally start by trying to control your glucose levels with diet and exercise, but if as you say you already do pretty well on that there's not much to change.

My guess would be a prescription for metformin which would probably last quite a while before insulin becomes necessary. Obviously, however, without knowing the results and such, it's difficult to tell exactly what is required.

    Hope it all goes OK!

Everyone in our family is diabetic except for me, and I have been told that its likely I will develop it because both my mum and dad had it. Something to look forward to then...that and piles.

Clunk - if you think you will develop diabetes then it makes sense to eat and exercise as if you do - it may well delay the onset and make it milder when (if) you do get it.

I'm sure if your parents have it then you'll be aware of the symptoms, but it's worth being aware should you get it.

Diabetes UK has some good information if anyone has or is worried about diabetes.

I do mate, I dont drink or smoke anymore, I watch my weight and cholesterol.

My dad was quite bad with it, he would go into comas now and then, but my mums is more of an annoyance to her.

So, pretty well clued up, but cheers for the info
