Just thought I'd see what 'underdog' software people are using.
For example, instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader I swear by Fox It Reader

And at a download of only 1.6Mb, it's bloody quick at opening

Yup I use foxit reader.
VLC instead of WMP
Omega drivers instead of Cats :)
linux?
lol, thats brilliant!
So what does the other 63.5MB of Adobe do?
Downloads updates.

Adobe reader 7.0.9 202.00mb:eek:
I need to look into Fox It Reader by the sounds of things.
For media players i use Media Player Classic. minimal, but with tonnes of options.
Hmmm.. will try foxit reader on my home PC methinks! Cheers for the heads up!
(unless I'm using the Mac of course ;-))
- Foxit Reader
- PDFCreator (which allows the creation of PDFs, all that Acrobat itself would get used for here)
- Firefox count?
- KMPlayer for video and Foobar for audio (though WMP still gets used for individual audio files)
- OpenOffice on any PC I build for individuals
- 7-Zip instead of WinZip, and usually WinRAR
- Imgburn instead of Nero (when at all possible)
- NOD32 instead of Norton (but anyone with an ounce of sense knows death > Norton)
- True Image instead of Ghost
- UltraVNC instead of PCAnywhere
Think that's about it :P
//edit: nope, on a re-read I forgot Real & Quicktime Alternative
also gonna try foxit, thanks for that
looks like i'll be adding 7-zip and Imgburn to my list of thins to try :)
Imgburn actually look really like DVDDecriptor, which also writes ISOs
Any recomendations on software to create audio CDs? Pretty sure Foobar2000 does it, but other suggestions are welcome too.
From memory:
CDRTFE - CD/DVD burning software (I got fed up of Nero bloat)
The GIMP - Image editor
Audacity - Audio editor
GAIM - Instant Messenger (multi-protocol)
FileZilla - FTP software
ConText - Text editor
7-zip - Compression
Firefox - Browser
Thunderbird - Mail client
we need a sticky with all the good alternatives in it, this is useful.
I'd imagine it would come out a touch like this: All new software stick ( with WINGS !! )
A few aspects of that one are out of date, but if you PM Moby Dick, he updates it for you. :)
(Love how it says 'last edited in 2004', as a couple of my recommendations were edited late 2006/early 2007. Gotta love dodgy software niggles) :D
Firefox

Winamp
THE AMAZING LAUNCHY!
CD-Ex for ripping MP3's, it's a bit of a pain to set up but once it's done right using it is a breeze.
Foxit is the best :) i think i got it off a PC gamer DVD at some point.. VLC and 7Zip are also great (pity the mac version of VLC is crap..)
I still use WMP 11 as my general media player, because it's never caused me any problems so far - much better than 10.
I quite like Paintdotnet for image editing - good for pixel art stuff
Notepad++ is fantastic for syntax highlighted text editing as well as viewing ASCII art, .nfo files, etc.
I use GoldWave for all my audio editing - the free version has all the features, but you have to close and reopen after 180 commands, which is fine for me :)
Also, before i forget - VirtualDub is THE best video editing program - ie if you want to split an avi file into two parts to fit on a dvd, or if you just want to cut sections
As an alternative to VLC, I use GOM player
http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html
Instead of Goldwave I use Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
For FTP, I actually use the windows explorer
Edit> Oh and Launchy is awesome!
