Cheers for the tip off I had no idea, will be interesting...
Once upon a time I was falling in love.
Now I'm only falling ...Um...a-spoon? Dum-dee-dum-dee-dee - Total eclipse of the Moon.
(I think the original was better).
PS: BBC have all the details, should be worth a look and easy to spot from the UK.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6411991.stm
If the weather is anything like tonight then there will be nothing to see :(.
That's lucky.
I am currently held captive by a primitive tribe in the south pacific who were going to sacrifice me to their moon god in a ceremony starting around 9:45.
I should be able to spin this advance knowledge to my advantage
Will have to look out for this, thanks.
definately interesting-, I've seen a solar one efore :)
Let's see if I can replicate my success of getting my last Lunar Eclipse photo in the local papers :)
I'll post it if I do.
Anyone got tips on how to get photos of this?
I was going to be out for a meal tonight, but going round to my parents instead. So i should have the opertunity to get out into the garden for a while. Lovely and clear up here
Ideally you'll need a telescope and afocal or prime focus methods, but a 12x zoom *might* just get an acceptable image.
It's going to be dim, so a slow exposure, but not slow enough to cause tracking errors :) Perhaps f4 at 1/30th ISO200 ?? Suck it and see...
My harrisphotography site has a few astro shots, some with EXIF data, so you can guess from them maybe. Happy Hunting anyway :)
Got my 300mm Sigma ready ;)
I'll be using my 350D with my 70-300 1:4-5.6 IS USM lens and a tripod so i'm thinking i *should* get at least something interesting.
I'll be shooting in RAW obviously :)
Thanks for remembering me , I had forgotten all about it. Just had a look outside -nice clear night at moment ( time is 18.00. Should be a good night for it . Going to run off and see if I can find the tripod.:)
lol..
the south pacific will partly be able to see it :P

awww i missed it
I was busy working at that time
:) i'm glad i live at the top of a valley so there's not much light, should get a cracking view
although this is wales, i predict cloud & rain ruining it :)
Great full moon views right now, taking 500mm f6 scope shots at 1/640th ISO200. Gonna also try with the 2x Barlow in, giving 1000mm focal length :)
1000, my !, that should be good , ' i'm strugging a bit' to new to camera . Great moon though !!.
Never realised, glad I caught this thread.. I'll keep a look out for it.
;)
As a taster of things to come (hopefully), here's one I did last year, 7th August 2006
http://www.harrisphotography.pwp.blu...e-070806-s.jpg
500mm scope, Nikon D70 at Prime Focus.
Right now it's starting to shadow I'm gonna go start shooting
Great to see, is.nt it. Perfect night for it.
Looking Good :)
Just had a gawp! absolutely stunning! I could watch it all night :)
g8ina! your pic is awesome!!! :D
Perfectly clear night here so QUICK how do I use my camera - it's a semi-decent pseudo-SLR Fuji S9600, what do I do what do I do....?
Set it to manual, set the aperture to about f/8.0, wind it out to maximum focal length (zoomage) and experiment with the exposure, probably about 1/250th for a sharp shot
oops forgot its the 3rd today.. minds dead
Right cheers I'm going to try that now
i wuz dissapointed, i wore my dark glasses so dont burn eyes and couldnt see it :(
WoW awesome find, thanks.
Have been outside in a T shirt since 9.48 and took bout 100 shots - handheld :undecided cos i couldn't find my tripod plate - arrgghhh, now gonna look how they turned out:confused:
Hot off the press. All Nikon D70 on my 500mm f6 scope with 2x Barlow giving 1000mm. All 1/100th second at ISO200.
The last batch will need to be 1 to 3 seconds at ISO1600 - this is a real DARK eclipse !!

I'll leave some space for you guys now :embarrassed:
Bugger off, post your pictures later ONCE the eclipse has finished :D It's my turn next if I can get some sharp photos... Only got one chance at this, best not mess it up :o
edit: alternatively go grab your biggest memory card and set your camera to burst mode for the entire duration of the eclipse, and make it into an animated GIF.
aww i wanted to take pics but my cameras a Sony T7 digi cam so thats useless.. and my brother has a Canon 350d with short distance lenses if i heard correctly from him :(
Stunning pics, really stunning
mine look a bit like a candle
EDIT: Blurry cheap candle
just took it with my camera for a laugh.. the pic is black and has a tiny white dot LOL
This is as good as it gets (tail between legs goes to bed)

Pretty neat Syd ! Well done, what kit did you use ?
I'm off to bed now, g'nite owls.

Taken with the Olympus SP-550UZ and Timelapse (a selection of the best ones). First images were 1/400, f4.5, ISO50 the last images were 1sec, f4.5, ISO100

bigger pic here - I was having focusing problems AF wouldn't work, and Manual focus seems to ignore what I wanted...
Hey,
Could one of you kind dudes with uber cameras make some lovely wallpaper for us please? 16x12 and 19x12 would be awesome :)
Cheers,
Suman
i got over a hundred shots last night, still got to process them.
Light was coming back to it about midnight up here.
Two thinks i would need in the future is either a bigger lens than my 70-300 or extension tubes and a remote shutter release. For he first time my right angle view finder attachement was really useful.
Darn it.. i've got one of those semi-SLR's (S9500) - but it never seems to want to focus right - and the pictures always end up tiny..
Any advice?
What do you mean by 'tiny'?
Even with a 12x zoom lens, the full moon will look small in a full frame. My shots are not cropped and use a 1000mm lens, so you can see how small cameras not attached to scopes or big lenses might fare. Quite understandable to be frustrated, but astronomers do tend to spend large amounts to get good shots :) Even my little scope cost me several hundred quid, and previous scopes have set me back over a grand.
A small scope can be had for 200 to 300 but then you need a way of attaching the camera to it. Two main methods : afocal projection - stick the camera with it's own lens up to a scope's eyepiece, or prime focus - only really usable with DSLRs, remove the lens and replace it with the scope.
Google "scopetronix" to show examples of various adaptors. Or for much more detailed info, join http://ukastroimaging.co.uk/forums/
Very nice friendly bunch of imaging astronomers, lots of useful advice.
Turns out my later shots weren't up to much due to the very dim moon. If I'd used a smaller lens, I would have posted but with the 1000mm lens, the moon's motion at 3 or 4 second exposures made the images blurry. Shame :(
I got some OK ones with my S9600, the best were about as good as Howard's second one above.
Obviously max zoom in, I used a tripod (£9.97 from tesco  ) and a cable release, and settings as per recommendation above. Manual zoom worked fine - all you have to do is keep turning the ring in the one direction until it ceases having any effect, i.e. infinite focal distance.
Ah right, thanks.
By tiny i mean about a third of the size of Howards' second one - i guess it's just practice :)
Opening the (9MP) pic at 100% in photoshop shows it to be about the same size as above - but if you just open in firefox or whatever then the picture is shrunk down to fit the whole thing on the screen.
Howard- great pics . infact all you guys pics are good.
Funkstar; Check out Amazon.co.uk for Canon RC-1 Remote Controller. Cost is 12.88. Been meaning to buy one but have not got round to it yet. Would have been ideal for last night.
Yeah, well done guys :)
Thanks for the sugestion Merdat. Unfortunitely Amazon is listing them at £16.99 with a one to two week delivery. Third party seller wants £14.99+postage.
On eBay they are going for £14.98 inc postage :)
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/sear...-1+&category0=
third party compatibles are cheaper.
I bought a cheapy remote release off ebay, cost like a fiver all in, works perfectly. I see no reason to spend thrice that ;)
Still not expensive, and i like to get the branded parts if they are not an unreasonable price :)
£15 is expensive for a switch ;)
wow @ the shots here. 70-200 IS USM f/2.8
