Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Anyone been watching Born Survivor: Bear Grylls?
I love this kind of stuff. Ray Mears has always been a bit of a hero to me, but i think Bear Grylls would beat him in a fight :D
That said, i think Born Survivor seems a bit suspicious to me. If anyone saw it this week, how convenient was that rope bridge, and how did the camera crew get across?
-
Bear is ex SAS, but Ray is a bona-fide legend imo.
Ray ftw!
-
I have to say while i love watching Bear Grylls, the born survivor series seems to be the largest amount of pre canned, camera shots i've ever seen.
and in 5...4....3....2....1 (cue bear panting out of breathe)
and to see where i'm going i'm just going to climb the nearest tree.
Enjoyable watching if you take it all with a pinch of salt, but definitely Ray FTW.

Not to be a doubter over his credentials but ex-SAS are normally unable to appear in public with their name.
Either way while I'm impressed by what they do, I wouldn't watch the programme as it all seems a bit posturing for me. I prefered the bloke who lived with the tribes in Africa, not so much the guy but its amazing how these people live and we get uppity when we lose water for a day or the heating breaks! And yes we're all guilty of that!
-
I watched the series some time ago where Bear was going thro training for the French Foreign Legion. That was undoubtedly harsh.
-
Bear was a bit to planned for me. Hes talking about how diffulcut the climb down the waterfall was and how there was no other way, yet it was filmed from the bottom  :undecided
Ray FTW "and now Im going to fashion a small light aircraft out of sticks so I can get home un hurt"
:D
(may not be real quote)
-
missed it. I believe thet Bears does a lot of work for the US channels, especially discovery, possibly why it looks rather staged.
Personally I think Loft Wiseman would have them both for breakfast, actually you could probably get a couple of meals out of Ray.
Bushcraft is quiet trendy at the moment, and quiet a money spinner. Personally I take a leaf out of both books when out in the woods, hav spent quiet a bit of teh weekend re profiling a coupel of axes for ruff camping use :)

For wiping your arse no doubt. I recommend 'A girls guide to hunting and fishing'. Very soft pages, and contrary to what you might expect, utterly useless for anything to do with hunting and fishing.

I think it depends how long ago they left, plenty of Ex-SAS have written books and appeared on TV.
-
Ranulph Fiennes would beat all IMHO even at the age of 57 :D

Best to avoid ones with lots of photos, you end up smearing it around.

Usually using pseudonyms though, such as Chris Ryan and Andy McNab
-
but then again is bear his real name?
you cant beat ray mears, and after all he teaches the military doesnt he. None like that bear bloke has been and done the stupid amount of travveling like ray mears. He has been just about everywhere and learnt from each place.
-
Ray wins hands down. He is just so calm and collected. I would trust him in a survival situation every time.

The guy has had quite an amazing life - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear_Grylls#Timeline
So basically then, what we are saying is that Bear would win a fight. But Ray would beat him on international Ready Steady Cook? :D
-
pretty mad what he has done to be fair.
-
Another Ray Mears fan here , just love how he can make a meal out of nothing, wish i could take him shopping with me
-
Mears FTW, but in a fight - it's gonna be Bear isn't it, unless Ray had time to prepare, in which case he'd fashion a longbow from the materials of the woodland and pin Bear to a tree from 100 metres...
-
Ray and GORDON :) ftw!
though i want Ray to stop producing tubs of creme freche from his backpack!!!

only by choice. Guys such as Ranulph Fiennes etc use their real name. McNab has alot of history in Northern Ireland so that is why he has done. For Ryan Im not sure why, he has his face plastered around everywhere (compared to McNab for example who is usually not shown in photos) and has afaik no service history in NI.
Bear was in the 21 SAS, a TA regt (still no laughing matter - the selection is the same but spread over weekends and they dont do the counter terrorist stuff) so he wouldnt have been posted in Northern Ireland

With you on this one, amazing how they made soup bread biscutes(sp) out of grass seeds and berries. Watched and enjoyed all Ray Mears stuff, got to love him and his trusty pen knife, "oh look a dangerious river, aren't I glad I packed my trusty penknife, I can whittle myself a canoe"

i laughed.
so true though

Ray would win, His skill are more general and specialised to actually living in the environment.
Bear is a survival guy that means he can survive but not live, there is a difference. He also has very little experience of the methods of the ways of the people that actually do live in the environment ( as far as I know) that would mean he is limited to what he knows from military training etc, All they teach is how to live long enough to get out. Far less skilled and specialised that Ray Mear.
I also thing Ray is far more experienced as he does it as a profession while bear did it as part of a profession. Ray also have has in my opinion a better and more patient personality. Patience is the key here.
From the little survival's training I have had as part of my profession I can say Bear skill would only take him so far while Ray could go above and beyond if need be.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Mmm I'd have to say Ray is more fake than Bear, just because lets be honest he's all well and good if you're going for a camping trip but if you accidentally get lost or your plane crashes you aren't going to go "ooo well now I get to use my machete" you'd go "oh crap I wasn't expecting this" where as Ray has everything except the kitchen sink in his bag.
It's fine if you have a machete and conveniently your fire lighter but how many people would carry a machete unless they were expecting to get lost in a forest? I mean my girl friend is going to Africa on a mission trip, so she'll be expecting to be guided and looked after, I don't see her carrying a machete and all weather fire lighter. And the episode I watched today Ray even went out of the way to have some stuff made before he got their, it was a bit like "right so if I get lost in the middle of nowhere or crash I should head for the nearest town and order custom made stuff? That's some great bushcraft there Ray now move your bum and teach me some proper survival skills"
I think you definitely have to respect Grylls though, he uses what he can get his hands on, of course he had a knife but apart from that. Anybody else hear he had his spine broken in 3 places after a sky dive or something went wrong? (Just a random piece of info) I just found him a bit more to do with immediate survival where as Mears felt a bit more like the Teddy Bears picnic. I know a lot of you love him but I just never felt he went into proper detail, it was a bit too vague, and repetitive. How many episodes does he need to tell us that horseshoe fungus is good for fires?
I'll give him the fact it is a very deep subject but like I said you just would not carry a machete as standard equipment unless you intended to camp out.

Speak for yourself, I never leave home without mine
-
Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
:confused:boinnnngg - ahh - why not?
But which one is more smug? Ray Mears is almost unbelievably smug at times. Never seen the bear bloke tbh, but he'd have to be pretty smug to out smug Ray. We're talking nearly as smug as Nigella Lawson.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
whats the website where you enter 2 names and they just start fighting to the death. thats the way to decide it :)

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
I actually met Ray Mears the other week, he's doing a tour, talking about his life & the filming of his series. Extraordinary chap & no mean Judo practitioner to boot. Also, on an average year he spends at least 230 to 250 nights under the stars. His poor crew gernerally eat what he eats too.
Bear Grylls came up in discussion at one point too lol, he said nothing, just smirked.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
They are demonstrating different but related ideas, bushcraft is mainly about living comfortably in the countryside / wilderness, hence you take the kit to keep you warm, dry, safe, fed, etc. Some people carry all they need in to the woods for a weekend, others carry all they need to live for a week. Quiet a few people travel to Norway so they can do some more in depth bushcraft than is generally available in the UK, this tends to involve some degree of hunting, trapping, semi permanent shelter building. I am quiet lucky in that I can do this in the UK, I have access to land where I can camp out, build shelter, hunt and fish.
Survival training covers keeping alive with what you have, or equipping yourself to stay alive long enough to be rescued, or rescue yourself. A good example is carrying a small survival kit, a knife, basic first aid, something compact to start a fire etc. I have linked below a good video about survival, and a link to an interesting post about somebody that survived a recent plane crash.

That was a great series and Bear just took it all in his stride. Out of the 12 or so that started I think it was only 4 that finished the training.
I've not seen the born survivor series, at least not all of it. I saw one clip where Bear was squeezing the water out of an elephant **** to get something to drink, I mean WTF :ill:

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
My brother went to 'an evening with' Ray Mears at Kings Lynn the other week, reckoned that he is a really nice, interesting bloke.
As for Bear Grylls, mwhahahaha.
-
Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
i enjoy watching bear and ray... and i must say i think ray seems like the better survivalist of the two but bear is the most entertaining to watch.
check out this video of bear in an extreme situation YouTube - Bear Grylls is a Fake

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
i think ray is the man. also when he was in mogolia wrestling he stated he'd been doing judo for about 20 years. thats a lot of skill, he even beat the mongolian at his own game!

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Bear Grylls (They call it 'Man Vs. Wild' here) is a wimp compared to Les Stroud. Watch a few episodes of 'Survivorman' for the real thing. Good advice will save your life. Bear deliberately does dangerous stuff which might kill you.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
From wikipedia
Criticism
Following allegations that the show deceived viewers into believing that he was really stranded in the wild when he wasn't, Channel 4 suspended broadcast of the show. Discovery aired re-edited episodes designed to remove faked elements, with a fresh voiceover, and has continued on with season three of the program.[6]
An adviser to the Man vs. Wild/Born Survivor series had claimed that rather than 'roughing it', Grylls had in fact been staying at a Californian hotel between filming. Similarly, it was alleged that Grylls had stayed at a motel in Hawaii while giving viewers the impression that he was stranded on a desert island. These allegations, and others, were confirmed by Channel 4, who argued that it wasn't a documentary, but a 'how-to' guide to survival, implying that 'faked' or re-shot scenes were acceptable in that context.
If you dropped Ray and Bear in the middle of the jungle hundreds of miles from anywhere, no doubt Ray would still be alive a month later. Not sure about Bear though.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Raymondo ftw!
I heard some interesting speculation on Mr Mears' background a while ago.
Grylls is quite controversial anyway - have a look about his hang-gliding above Everest claims - a tough guy, a charming guy but also a big-time self-publicist (which you probably have to be in the media, I suppose.)
-
Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Mr grylls may be a bit of a nob..
But he has done some pretty cool things..
And HAS summited everest which I would say is something ray mears couldnt as I doubt hes fit enough
-
Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Pfft Mears would make some nifty catapult contraption out of pine trees to summit Everest :P
-
Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
Ray is Awesome!! Bear is just doing this for fame. You see him killing animals, taste a bit, gag & spit it out! Thats not survival! Its obviously put on for the camera & is such a disgusting waste of life and resources! For real genuine survival master watch RAY MEARS. Not only does he survive but he does so with respect & consideration for the animals & environment. And Ray Mears programmes doesnt have that flashy showbiz reality tv feel that Bear has.

Re: Bear Grylls Vs. Ray Mears
