Guys,
I think we need a forum CD list - the idea is these are 10 CDs which everyone on the forum should buy/own/listen to at least once.
They should be classics - music which either makes you happy/sad/tear jerkers - etc.
It can be music which is just a *must* you may not even like the band or the song :)
Admiration of Music List or something? :)

They're not necessarily my favorite albums by the named artists, but either the most influential or accessible in their respective genres. And whilst there are other albums I would love to have everyone listen to (e.g. Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump) I reckon these 5 present a wonderful musical spectrum that everyone can enjoy. And hopefully they're also somewhat less obvious choices than the OK Computer someone is bound to have suggested by the time I hit "Post Quick Reply"

It's lovely to see some Floyd from most people - but I think the problem with a band with as long and varied a history as Pink Floyd is that any single studio album represents only a limited snapshot - whilst Echoes is about the finest "Best Of" album ever produced, covering their entire history

true. but i'd rather miss selected good tracks for access to the finest tracks. Comfortably Numb and The Great Gig In The Sky on the same album - yay! It's not as if it's just a collection of tracks, as most Best-Of's are though. They've done a fantastic job in crafting a coherent album from a wide variety of different sample musicQuote:

I was umming and arring ( that's not because i'm a farmers son either :P )about which pink floyd album to post but i like dark side of the moon slightly more than meddle, all told though i think you're right echoes is a good pink floyd representation i just don't like compilation albums. I mentioned OK computer because i do think it's a good album, i'm not just mentioning it because it's a popular choice. There's so much good music out there to be heard though that a list like this is hard to compile. I was very tempted to put Ocean Colour Scene in there too, they're one of my favourite bands at the moment.
R.E.M. - New Adventures In Hi-Fi (not as universally popular as Automatic For The People, but a better album in my opinion).

Those are the albums that, if you haven't heard them, I would implore you to go out and find copies of now. It's a fairly eclectic mix - Death's Design is a highly progressive black metal album, whereas Bryter Later is light, folky, and utterly wonderful. They are all albums that I got to the end of, and felt that I'd really heard something significant there, though, and several of them could almost be defined as life-changing.
EDIT: Holy ****, I forgot The Jam. I'll kick Demon Days out, and bring in Setting Sons.

U.N.K.L.E. need at least one entry on the list. A somewhat nebulous group which mostly contains James Lavelle, and at the time of this album also contained DJ Shadow. Their first studio album, Psyence Fiction is a curious musical journey, featuring masterful performances by greats such as The Beastie Boys. A bizare "trip-hop" mix of beats and sounds, well worth at least one listen. Fewer "fantastic" tracks than Never, Never Land, but probably a better album overall (a bit like The Bends versus OK Computer or By The Way versus Californication). This French duo more or less invented modern chillout. Moon Safari was their first studio album, and spawned a hundred imitations (or "inspired" albums at least) such as Zero 7's Simple Things. Floaty, pleasant, and inoffensive. Not my favorite Air album (I prefer the more electronic sounds of 10,000Hz Legend), but probably the most influential. Favorite track: "New Star in the Sky"Quote:

Well, this is a bit of a departure, isn't it? Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black", is (was) American Country Music's finest. I don't have the time or energy to cover Cash's musical histroy here, but suffice to say it took a very long time to reach this album - released not long before he died in 2003. Mostly a bunch of covers in his own style, this album is a fascinating take on well-known and less-well-known tracks such as Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus or Nine Inch Nails' Hurt. Well, I've already covered this somewhat. One thing I love in music is variation and change - and one band that can guarantee it is Pink Floyd. Other bands take to change well (e.g. Radiohead), some less well (e.g. R.E.M), but generally speaking, Pink Floyd's musical history is about as varied as you can get. As such, it's extremely difficult to pick a single album that encompasses everything you might want to learn when getting introduced to the band. I normally shy away from "best of" albums, as I strongly feel that there's a musical difference between an album and a collection of unconnected tracks. However, the work that went into the production of Echoes allows for a decent look at most of the band's discography without ever being short-changed with disjointed track changes. I couldn't pick one Pink Floyd album that covers everything the band has to say - and Echoes comes as close as possible to picking all of them in one go.
