    Ultimate CD List

    Guys,

I think we need a forum CD list - the idea is these are 10 CDs which everyone on the forum should buy/own/listen to at least once.

They should be classics - music which either makes you happy/sad/tear jerkers - etc.

It can be music which is just a *must* you may not even like the band or the song

Admiration of Music List or something?

I know it's not been setup yet but:

    1. David Bowie, Hunky Dory
    2. Rage Against The Machine, Rage Against The Machine
    3. Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells
    4. Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
    5. Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms
    6. Steely Dan, The Ultimate Collection
    7. Bruce Springstein, Darkness on the Edge of Town
    8. Supertramp, Breakfast in America
    9. Led Zepplin, Led Zepplin IV
    10. Bob Marley, Exodus

Pretty predictable really but I first heard them when I was in my teens and since then they've gotten me through many a dark hour...

    U.N.K.L.E. - Psyence Fiction
    Rob Dougan - Furious Angels
    Air - Moon Safari
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around
Pink Floyd - Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd

They're not necessarily my favorite albums by the named artists, but either the most influential or accessible in their respective genres. And whilst there are other albums I would love to have everyone listen to (e.g. Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump) I reckon these 5 present a wonderful musical spectrum that everyone can enjoy. And hopefully they're also somewhat less obvious choices than the OK Computer someone is bound to have suggested by the time I hit "Post Quick Reply"

Tee hee, I was right about OK Computer

It's lovely to see some Floyd from most people - but I think the problem with a band with as long and varied a history as Pink Floyd is that any single studio album represents only a limited snapshot - whilst Echoes is about the finest "Best Of" album ever produced, covering their entire history

The thing about Echoes is that, of course, they've left loads of great stuff out but what can you expect for a double CD Compilation for a band with this kind of history?

But what a wicked tune Echoes is in itself eh?

I knew I wouldn't be alone bigging up jacko!

The thing is that a top 10 really requires a lot of streamlining and I'm already seeing other people's lists and thinking, "but I love that album too..."

true. but i'd rather miss selected good tracks for access to the finest tracks. Comfortably Numb and The Great Gig In The Sky on the same album - yay! It's not as if it's just a collection of tracks, as most Best-Of's are though. They've done a fantastic job in crafting a coherent album from a wide variety of different sample music

But what a wicked tune Echoes is in itself eh?
I'm a sucker for, well, most of the album! Echoes included though

Thats just 10 suggestions, it's not definative. I'd also agree on some of the other suggestions. Especially Air and Pink Floyd. Also the ones above aren't all my idea of the greatest albums in the world (ever!) or even my favourites, just ones that i think people should listen to.

I'm not a big fan of performance videos. I think when spotty nerdy-looking men hit the music scene, the use of video as a much more conceptual tool picked up - and I absolutely love the synaesthesic aspects of some modern videos. The video for The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (by Michael Gondry) remains my all-time favorite.

It's like videos of a wedding I think - what point are pictures, when you need to be there to properly experience a performance?
