moral music piracy

this is a little curiosity, so please indulge me.

a hell of a lot of you download music off the net. don't deny it, i can see you hiding back there.

now the thought struck me. everyone who downloads music hates the RIAA. there are good reasons for this. suing 12 year olds tends to annoy people. shops charging £15 for a cd where less than 20p of that goes to the artists is, undoubtedly, bad.

for the sake of argument, if you could, would you pay an artist 50p for an album? not the record industry, not the promoters, not the wholesalers, not the distributors, not the high street. if your money went to the band that played the music, would you pay it? 50p is a lot more than they get from their record labels, so it certainly wouldn't be cheap of you to do so

so i want to know: if you could, would you skip the middlemen?

and no, i'm not encouraging piracy, i'm just saying "if pirate music managed somehow to get into your posession, would you pay a pittance to the artist to thank them?"

yeah, seing as they get 50p per sale, and rest goes to the RIAA, then yeah

id sooner give the artist say a quid, and give the RIAA bugger all, the artists do the work, they deserve it, the RIAA doesnt do bugger all, but the fact they have a monopoly most the money goes thru them and theres nothing no one can do

its like microsoft, in a way, would you sooner pay 100 for xp, or pay 50p for linux?

id pay 50p for linux, if it was the same as windows, but with no bill gates taking all the money, unfortunutly its not, like artists will find it hard to break their new music without the help of the RIAA

of course (that is the anser that youre looking for). I support my local bands by buying their Promo CD's, thats way more than 50p a cd (2-4 quid normally), but it helps pay for their studio costs, and I think that all creativity should be encouraged. If all i have to do is pay a little cash, im more than willing. Id only spend it on (more) beer.

thats what i generally do, i dont buy cds from hmv anymore, if i do buy cds there from play, so there cheap and the minimum amount goes to the RIAA :D

i generally go to a lot of gigs, i must have been to 30 or so this year alone and whenever i find a band i like, or who are good, i buy a t shirt off them, or as you say a promo cd for a few quid, to help them along :)

good example - since most bands onyl earn enough money from a case of beer from album sales, gigs are vital, so going to see a band live is the best support you can give them

I would if I could skip people like the RIAA ... although for most of us its the BCA, as we're not in the US ;)

i'm using the RIAA as the global figurehead for international music lobyist groups such as the BPI

id be happy to pay more than 50p, aslong as it goes to the artist, CDs are a total ripp off no doubt about it.

the only albums i buy are by artists i really like anyway, so as far as im concerned they could have the full 15 quid i'd spend normally

yeah, me to. if i download a song by an artist, im going to buy the album anyway.

I'd quite happily pay £5 for an album downloadable from the artists site, if they sent you 192 or 256 kb/s mp3's with album covers..


20p going to the artsist is taking the mic tbh..
