When's the best time to buy a new laptop?

I'm not really talking about something like the end of August of every year because it pleases the monkey gods or something, but is there any new technologies coming out soon or anything that is worth waiting for?

I'm looking at buying a Dell 9400/6400 with Core 2 Duo's, etc, and the Dell 9400 with the 7900GS hopefully. But this is to replace my severely ageing PC for when I go to Uni... so I don't need to wait for anything super high end, but if the 7900 gets phased out into something far more expensive like a new 8800GTS Go (whatever it's going to be called) I'm not going to really be a happy chappy ;_;. And since it's Uni I guess the latest is the end of Summer - but at that sort of time there's probably a LOT of popularity in buying new laptops.

Any advice is appreciated, plus any advice on getting what I can out of Dell down the phone is a bonus :lol: !

The problem is that there's ALWAYS new technologies coming out. Thus there's not really a "good time". The fact of the matter is that if you wait until these new features are implemented into laptops, when it comes to buying these feature-full laptops you'll see that even newer features are around the corner. It's sods law ;)

Buy it when you need it. As Kezzer said, there's always new tech around the corner. It's an unavoidable fact of computer hardware.

If you wait for new tech, you'll be waiting forever; however there's no point in buying the laptop until you need it.

Keep an eye out on the Dell deals in the weekend papers.

erm i'd suggest the dell outlest/dabs offers as they have some pretty good ones, dell had a c2d and X1300 deal with 1/2gb ram for under £500 which isnt to be ignored tbh

Phone Dell when they're coming up to the end of their financial quarter - they're usually anxious to shift units then.

Heh yeah that was my motto for PC building for a while, although I've kind of abandoned that hobby now that I have no moneys :lol: .

There are always new techs around the corner, but I do think it is true that there are better time than others (new tech taking longer to be released, or current tech performing not much worse than the new tech etc - and the other way round).
