Right, that’s enough buddy. If you want to debate / chat here, you’re welcome to, but personal insults are a no-no. If you carry on down the road of childish name-calling because you can’t write a proper reply, the admins will ban you from the forum.

Express your point of view by all means, regardless of if people agree with you (although you will struggle to find support for your posts around here), but do it in appropriate manor

No. Modern socialists are just well meaning capitalists ask Tony and Gordon. I like money as well as the next man. If its about sharing then you only take out of the pot when you are contributing yourself. Us "socialists" will lock you up just as quick as any right winger if not quicker.
I dont think Stalin and the rest had much time for your kind of sharing either.
Insults that were deserved you have single handedly manage to insult some of the nicest folks on Hexus and you still cannot see you are just plain wrong laddie/lassie.

I'm sorry - I know this is completely off-topic, but for some reason that picture just completely cracked me up!

So, by that logic... the writer of the software can write it for free, and everybody else is allowed to pirate it? And if that does happen, production of commerical software such as Adobe Photoshop will continue?

And when we buy a car, we should only pay for the raw materials that went into producing it?

    [...]
XP has been massively pirated....therefore MORE people are using XP than they would other OS's (such as linux or Apple's OSX (if thats the right version)) so as such they are gaining market share on the competition even more.
I agree that market share can positively influence long term profitability, but I do not believe it will necessarily positively influence the overall profitability (short term + long term). You still need to strike a balance and the nature of the application, or market, broadly speaking, matters.

An OS is something every users need. If people had to give up a specific OS, then they will have to relearn another system, but also the applications used by the other system. The time and effort may therefore not be worth the cost, hence an early people may be more willing to stick with a system, even if they had to pay more for it (hence dominating the market make sense - though I'd argue that MS OS have reached a level where they won't gain as much from additional market share by now).

Photoshop on the other hand - may be necessary for some. But I do believe that it is highly pirated, because of it's reputation as a powerful graphic editors. But I do not think that most of the people who pirate the software need the software enough to eventually shell out for it (the dependency factor is probably less than that of an OS). Hence the long term gain of market share is, IMO, of a lesser importance.

Piracy is a crime. The law says it is. Thus no matter what you say AGAINST it, it is still the law and you are breaking it, thus committing a crime and a felony. Its like the speed limit. You are in a 40 zone. You do 41. Are you committing a crime? Yes you are. The law says you must obey the speed limit. Period. We may not like the way that is handled, but at the end of the day its a crime.

Stealing comes in all sorts of ways, physical and non physical. If I were to copy your hard drive with all your personal data on, is that considered stealing? Yes it is. Same with music and application software. Just because you do not have the money to pay for it does not excuse you from the act.

I do believe that some software is overpriced. Windows, Adobe stuff etc. If they perhaps halved their costs, it might persuade some people to buy them, and in the end they could probably make more money.

Thankfully working in an educational establishment, I can get most software at very good prices.

No you're not - the speed limit is actually 10% of what the supposed limit is, so in a 40mph zone, the limit is actually 44mph. I've since read that it's actually 10% of the limit + 2mph on top, but I'd not heard that one before.

Of course, this is to allow a certain degree of tolerance in speedometers and radars and such, but still, I feel like being pedantic again.

It is actually 40mph, however due to the fact that tachometers give slightly innacurate readouts they give you the 10% as a bit of leeway incase your car said it was going at 40 but in fact it was going at 44 etc.

Another thing that annoys me on top of the ridiculus prices we have to pay is the fact that you buy a piece of software and you can only use it on one computer. Before you all take this the wrong way let me explain myself

I have two desktop PCs and a laptop. I have my main desktop at my flat at uni, my second desktop is at home (parents house) and I use my laptop when I head up to uni and travel home (roughly every fortnight). Not only do i have mutiple computers but I also have several operating systems. On my laptop I run osx and vista. On my main desktop I run ubuntu and xp and on my other desktop I run xp.

Now as you can imagine the posses a couple of problems. Firstly, when I head back home from uni I can't bring my main dekstop back with me. The same applies when I head up to uni. I guess I could just install all my important software on my laptop but I don't have enough space in my flat to use it on a table so I have to use it on my bed and my back is already really bad. Also the screen is a lot smaller. Again, I guess I could buy a cable to connect it to my desktop monitor. These are not ideal solutions though.

Another problem is when I switch between OSs. Some programs are OS specific and others are not.

It would be nice to know that when I spend £200 on Office or £600 on Photoshop, or however much they really are (msdnaa and student discount are a godsend), that I could use them on all my OSs and machines. I mean this type of behaviour is possible with DVDs, computer games and music.

I can understand if they allowed this it would be a lot easier to distribute software illegally. However, I wouldn't mind a Steam type system, where you have to log in to use the software, if it meant I could use it when and where I want.
