There are three basic types of cells lining the respiratory tract:

Ciliated cells (with little hairs on them - cilia - that contract in a wavelike motion to bring mucus up to the throat (the mucociliary escalator, as it is know).

Basal or replacement cells, which divide to replace other cells.

Goblet cells - these are wineglass shaped (hence the name) cells which secrete a protein called mucin. Once outside the cells, this mixes with water to create the sticky substance mucus, which traps most foreign particles before they reach the lungs.

Snot is not always just mucus and airborn dust.....sometimes, it has nasal hair in it, to help mat it together

Yes, smoking causes a change in tissue type (something known in pathology as a metaplasia), so the columnar cells no longer have cilia, hence mucus no longer gets moved up to your mouth and remains in the lungs, blocking them up and providing an easy site for infection.

And here's a fun fact: when it's cold the cilia don't work as well, that's why people generally find themselves with a lot more phlegm.
