    Scientology

I have to be honest, I've never really looked into Scientology much, although heard about it on a few occasions. I knew it was a bit different to mainstream religions, but that was about it.
Then when browsing the BBC tonight, I come across this gem.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6650545.stm

When you have paid as much as £100,000, you get to Operating Thetan Level Three and learn about "The Incident".

L Ron wrote that 75 million years ago an intergalactic space alien lord called Xenu kidnapped Thetans to earth, dumped them in volcanoes and blew them up with atomic bombs.
Scientologists want 'the global obliteration' of psychiatrists

    I'm speechless!

I read this article last night, its pretty nuts. Definately something I want to tune into . . .

One of the 'see also' articles was pretty good too, distinguishes between cult and religion (with particular attention to scientology) :

Oh yeah, Scientology is loopy. Active imagination on that Hubbard fellow. I read a lot of his SciFi books before I knew anything about the religion, and although they start off fine, there's certainly something a little disturbing about some of the central concepts.

The true brilliance of L. Ron Hubbard was that he actually cribbed the idea from one of his own stories. He wrote a short story about a space traveller who crash-lands on a primitive planet and, in order to raise the planet to the appropriate technological level to help repair his ship, created a religion of which he was head. The space-dude made billions and then was able to sod off back to Earth with a ship-load of expensive stuff.

    L. Ron simply put this into action in the USA. A lot easier than getting rich by writing books.

Scientology is great for poking fun at. I love the fact that to reach the higher echelons of the 'religion' you have to be ordained so to speak on a boat at sea.

Looking at it closer I'd say that's because once you reach the appropriate level they tell you the 'secrets', ie. the real story that it's just a money making scam and educate you in the art of fooling the 'lower level' scientologists. If you don't like it......they shoot you and push you overboard.

That reminds me of that old Robert Maxwell joke about how he drowned.

Apparently he was on the deck of the ship at night and, affected by the moonlight sparkiling on the waves he fely moved to ask the blonde girl leaning on the rail next to him for a shag. When she refused he asked "Well, will you toss me off then?"

The South Park Episode 'S09xE12 - Trapped In The Closet' is all about Scientology. It pissed off lots of Scientologists, and made Issac Hayes leave the cast. It also made me physically pee myself laughing.

The episode 'S07-E12 - All About The Mormons' is also a hilarious watch, and both episodes just explain how excruciatingly stupid both religions are based on the reasons and beliefs they were founded on.

Yeh but Agent, from an atheists point of view, there's no difference between Christianity and Scientology in terms of its craziness. The only reason Christianity is more accepted is because it was the norm throughout time. Imagine if Christianity suddenly cropped up into society? Virgin woman gets impregnated by the Holy Ghost and hey presto the Son of God is born who then goes around performing various "magic" tricks on the people of towns, then gives his own life up because of it.

To a non-religious person that would sound nuts

I'm an athiest and always thought scientology sounded really stupid and whatever, but that's a good point you make and one that, considering it, is very true!

Having said that I still think scientology takes the biscuit on the stupidness part. I don't understand how people can actually believe in it!

£100,000? To be a certain level of loopy?

Isnt this just an insane way to make money from people rich and stupid enough to partake?

Im going to make my own religion, its called Insaneology. We can all fly. We can reach space. We can put our hands in our pockets and pull out any amount of money we want.

    Now give me £100,000.

    Honestly, though, come on..

yep, but you cant take off from the ground, you need the appropriate thermals, so the top of the Milennium Eye would be a good place to start.

I've always found these cults really strange are people really that stupid to believe this utter trollop.

Seriously, how on earth do they get anybody with more than half an ounce of common sense to fall for it.

If it affected no one else I'd said go for it a fool and their money are easily parted why not.

The fact is that scientology is infecting lots of stuff even here in the UK and they harras and stalk anyone who tries to show the truth.

I'm also surprised that in the day of the internet more people aren't aware of this.

Fair play to the bbc for sticking to their guns, they are possibly the only not totally biased broadcaster left. Heck they even call themselves out on the news which always makes me chuckle
