RAF Requirements

Hey guys hope someone can help me!

My mate has just finished his a-levels and he wants to join the RAF and be a fast jet pilot. However he is a tall guy, is there some requirments on height etc?

Ive checked the website but it does'nt give and restrictions. Just says yes AND no which is no help at all tbh.

Do any of you guys have any experience on this?

There is no general height restriction for people joining the RAF, however there are height restrictions in some jobs, including Firefighter and Pilot. Pilot height restrictions depend on the aircraft you fly.

how tall is he?

He is about 6Ft 4. He is smart great eyesight and is very fit. its Just the height thing at the minute.

Think he would be gutted if he was kept out because of that.

It's not height that's the problem!

It's the length of your thigh bone. My housemate at uni wanted to fly *something* and couldn't because if he had to eject it would have taken his kneecaps off... ew.

He's out in Iraq at the mo though, so I can't ask till he's back

6'4" shouldnt be a problem I dont *think*. He's best checking with the RAF careers office though

Well he is skinny but toned i guess so i dont think weight is a problem.

He says if he is turned down to fly fast jet planes like fighters etc that he will not join. So i dunno.

He has emailed them so hopefully they let him know for sure.

There is a height restriction on flying jets. Got a mate that wanted to join the RAF doing this. However, due to his height, about the same as your mate, he would only be able to fly the bigger slower planes. The reason for this is because if he had to eject from the plane he would lose his legs.

He never joined as he did not want to fly the slower planes.

There is a height restriction (well there was when I went for fast jet). I am 6' 2" and I was fine, but 6' 4" might be too high or just on the limit. It also depends on the aircraft, the Tornado has a pretty high canopy but the Typhoon is smaller.

Hight is probably the least of his worries! The tests and medicals are much harder, he has to pass an aptitude test and they go from that whether you will be fast jet, logistics or helicopter.

Tell him to get ready for some serious multitasking, playing a game and doing something else at the same time is a good way to get used to it.

Make sure he is working out, lots of running. You have to have seriously a good cardio vascular system due to the demands. I failed my medical (after having a RAF scolarship at uni) for having too low blood pressure.

Tell him to ask the RAF if he can get a sponsorship at uni, that makes life easier due to extra cash and the RAF will look after you.

They know that is the reason most people want to join, thing is that the people who can pass the aptitude test for it REALLY do want to join and it not just a speed thing.

I didn't want to fly a hercules after spending my time dreaming of fast jet, it was my aim from a little kid. I regret turning down logistics now, I can't afford to get my PPL myself but I dearly want to fly.

Well everyone has their dream jobs and if that job is a fast jet pilot then its a fast jet pilot

How does one get ready for an aptitude test? I have heard of it before but know nothin about them. Im sure he has though
