In all seriousness, its rotten to see a business that has been built from the ground up go under like that, i hope theres light at the end of this tunnel. I only recently found out about the place as i mentioned before (probably in feisty thread), but i had planned quite a few purchases from there

I used to buy records at an old Fopp store, I think they advertised it as "Scotland's Oldest Vinyl Department" or something (presumably that was still running) - they were bang on, selection wise, in a lot of genres and were probably really influential in how my taste and style developed. They also provided a lot of limited releases, and pre-releases, that I couldn't think where else between Edinburgh and Glasgow would provide them - some of these ended up to be worth quite a bit of money too. Their bargain bins were not filled with the usual codcrap, either.

I'd often save time by going to Fopp to get a book to read - by going to Waterstones, I'd spend hours looking for something and have to spend the rrp - by going to Fopp, they provided an ideal selection and usually only paid £5 for a £6.99/£7.99 book.

I don't know about the rest of the UK either, but certainly within central Scotland they were big. I spent a great deal of time there when I was in school - something I still see when I pass the store - so if they do close, then where will all the school kids go? Won't somebody please think of the children?!

they were orignaly Scottish, and to be honest i didn't know they had so many stores until recently when i went to their website.

A comentator on 6Music at the weekend said they struggled to adapt from a company with 20 outlets into the size of company they expanded into.

I can't speak for ant others, but the Aberdeen an Glasgow ones were always busy when i was in... and that was a lot!

i remember years back going into my first fopp in Edinburgh and it was an instant hit with my family

this is such a shame - they did do some good deals but most people i know who still buy music buy in bulk and one of the crazy virgin/ hmv sales so they are kind of doomed in that respect

They've closed the doors for the moment, although they will more than likely have an administration sale, cause they must have a hell of alot of stock to shift!

Unless their distributers take the stock back. I don't know what terms they sell their good under. A lot of places are on sale or return contracts.

The £7 and under stock may just get sold off, but the £10-12 will problably get returned, de-priced and sent to other retailers.

Erm... yeah. Thats why most items on sale are priced like that. You concluded that just now? Didn't really need concluding did it?

If you read what I said, rather that just sniping, you'd see that that related to something that happened years back, and further that the conclusion I mentioned related to a specific piece of market testing that confirmed what would seem to be obvious from common sense.

    Nooo... Fopp! Gone!

As has been said, this was a great chain of music shops. I found them by accident the first time, then bought about 90% of my CDs from there.

    Shame to see it go

For all the fans of Fopp... they will rise from the flames!

HMV have bought the company out and will reopen 6 of the city centre stores, independent of the HMV brand, good news all round!

Can't see it helping for long....can't see people like HMV lasting much longer either unless they seriously change their business model.

With the way music access is going, net downloads, direct to mobile etc. People just aren't going to visit music stores when they've got such a glut of stuff at home or on their phone.

There'll always be a hardcore selection of fans who love to spend hours browsing the racks, but that's not enough to keep these kinds of businesses afloat.

Music is the ultimate online purchase. You can see the coverart, you can list the contents, you can even provide samples of every single track on the cd, at access speeds typically faster than any instore listening post. And that's only if you actually want a hard copy of the cd.....if you're just looking for the track, then none of that matters, and you'd never visit a music store in the first place, as you can't buy just one track.

Think High Fidelity meets Empire Records meets.....I don't know....The Matrix?

Damn shame. Almost as much as when Beano's in Croydon closed.
    Not around too often!
