Being bullied? Just shut a few websites down

    Problem solved, apparently.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6925444.stm

    A few gems

Teachers have called for websites such as YouTube to be shut down as part of efforts to prevent pupils and staff being bullied.
Sure. Why not. Who said evolution had to move forward?
Infact, while we are at it, shut down the phone network too. E-mail? Guess that can be used too; Bye.
Sod it, lets close royal mail, after all, I suppose the distress that could be caused by someone sending a dodgy letter is enough to warrant it, right?

Delegates at the conference of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) said bullying can continue outside school and work hours.
Got to admire these geniuses for being able to conclude such a fact really.

They said bullies can send abusive text messages or e-mails to victims.
    NO WAY!

They backed a motion demanding that such websites be closed down.
who said one teacher had been the subject of a death threat which was posted online.
Oh teh noes, it was posted on the interwibble!!!
What about the mass numbers of teachers who get threatened verbally and via written notes in schools?

Catriona Tait, a newly qualified primary teacher from Dundee, said one in four pupils had experienced online and text bullying at some time.
More to the point, what the hell are kids in primary school doing with mobile phones and being online, unsupervised?
Or is this another case of someone under qualified commenting on people in schools above whats she's trained to deal with?

I have never read so much crap in one article (excluding Fudzilla). I don't know who to blame, the idiots that come out with comments like above, or the BBC for making an article that reads like it was knocked up by one of those kids at primary school.

Attack the symptoms, and pretend that will cure the disease. Perhaps trying to have parents raise their children instead of relying on TV to it would help.

I don't think it's a question of trying to stop bullying, it's a question of whether or not sites like YouTube are allowing new forms of bullying that the teachers feel poorly equiped to deal with. After all, there's been bullying in school for practically forever but at least when it was confined to the playground and your trip to & from school, it was controllable to some extent. There was usually some way to get protection.

With the rise of the internet and mobile phones, everyone is more and more reachable and thus targetable by bullies. Whereas before you could at least be fairly sure it'd stop when you got home, now you find kids are being targeted in their own homes, a place where they should feel safe and secure. It's not a lot different to the feelings people get after they're burgled whilst still at home or if they're a vicitim of child abuse from a relative.

Personally, I don't think that shutting YouTube down would make a blind bit of difference to this situation and yes, parental supervision would go some way to helping protect the victims but ultimately this is a result of our choices to lead a much more interconnected "modern" lifestyle where you are always available, no matter where you go and being "out of touch" is a Bad Thing (tm)

I was bullied, it was ignored by the teachers until I nearly killed the ring leader outside of school one day, they got all the sympathy and I got 2 years with a head shrinker.

They need to get rid of this PC bollocks and actually do something about bullying, as it stands teachers cant really do anything and when the person being bullied hits back there usually the one that gets punished for it.

Failing that ignore the fact that people get bullied, and accept it as a part of life.

    Bee in your bonnet Agent?

Stopping this kind of stuff from being as easily distributed is a good thing. Sure, it's not going to have huge effect, but it doing this is an easy measure that will reduce the harm of the victim.

Of course there's other and bigger factors, but that doesn't mean you should ingore small things either, you should do both.

Personally I think you tube ought to forbid any criminal activities being shown - take some of the ease of bragging out of it and see if it helps.

At least it's not all one way.

Emma-Jane Cross, chief executive of the charity Beatbullying, rejected the idea of closing down websites.

She said: "Calls for social networking sites like YouTube to be closed because of cyberbullying are as intelligent as calls for schools to be closed because of bullying.
Someone should give those teachers something to cry about.

They don't make bullies like they used to...

I also have never been bullied for many reasons, the main ones being I was rather popular amongst my peers in Primary School and in Secondary School; my brother had a reputation for breaking skulls so everyone knew I was his little brother and wouldn't dare harm me.

Thats besides the point though, obviously, the internet and mobile phones have become a staple of the bully in today's society, thats not to say thats the only thing that they use today, I've heard songs that have abusive themes to a certain individual, such as raping his mum, shooting his girlfriend etc. I've seen fights break out because of such songs.

Already, I've mentioned a method of bullying that goes on in the playground, but hasn't been mentioned, it shows just how dis-illusioned our authorities are, perhaps our kids are growing at a pace that is so fast, that the people in charge have no ways to deal with it, either because of the Government's inability to adapt and evolve with growing situations.

As it stands the education system is so old fashioned and out of touch with todays society that it will be a long time before bullying can be dealt with effectively.

Its a lot to say, the Internet and mobile phones are the vehicles for bullying, its not doing anyone any favours, as we all know, to just remove all that and think that the bullying will suddenly stop, is just rediculously naive to the point its quite shocking.

As has been mentioned, its not about banning these things and thats all, its about cracking down hard on bullying, getting rid of the red tape preventing teachers and schools from dealing with bullies, the more things we ban the more like the USA we will become ("Porn makes people evil, drug-addicted, rapists, lets ban porn").

For a small part, whilst some kids live in broken families or have useless neglectful parents, there unfortuneately always be bullies however, if we give children enough education about the value of respect for one another and also teach parents to be responsible and encourage them to know what their children are up to on the Internet and at school, then I think we can be on to a winner.

However, lets not forget that bullies don't only exist in schools, they also exist in the work place.

The bottom line is, we have to stop banning things and assume it will stop something from happening, we should stop sweeping things under carpets and closing our eyes to it, or we'll end up in a similar situation as that in the Simpsons (the one where Homer was in charge of waste disposal ).
