London to Newcastle - best route?

    A1(M) or M1?

It's been so long since I've driven North, I can't remember which is the better way to go. From what I recall, the A1 is a PITA with roundabouts etc.....I'd rather go a little out of the way and keep up a good speed than piss around....

    Suggestions?

From East Midlands Airport (the furthest south I've been on the A1) north there are no roundabouts at all all the way up to Edinburgh.

To visit my parents in my hometown. Sunderland.

It's not really. I was actually born in Sheffield. But I spent a good 10 years south of the Wear. Not proud of the fact. Nor should you be if you come from Newcastle. It's not much better.

How's the A1 south of East Midlands airport? Anyone know?

My mate drove to the Carnoustie open both ways on the A1 the other week no problems.
I will be taking the very same road back to Scotland on Friday.
It is great road just time it so you miss the rush hours at major places.
The only problem I ever have with the A1 is after Newcastle.
So I always leave it at Scotch Corner.

Straight up the M1 is the best route except for the unfortunate roadworks by Sheffield (3hr tailback when I was at Leicester a few weeks back). Once passed them though it is straight through. I usually do the M1 then crossover to the A1 or A19 once I get near Teeside. At least that way there are plenty turn offs for Chester Le Street, Sunderland and Newcastle.

Only know this because I live in that vicinity!

Probably the M1, the A1(M) past London is full of speed cameras and roundabouts. I'd switch over to the A1 further north. M1>M18>A1

Oh, okay, you're excused if you're a local. Me I'm still an outsider but then I've only been living round here since I was nine. BTW If you're ever round this part of Sunderland don't stick your tongue out - someone will have off with it.

I just done this journey yesterday, Id go M25 upto J27 then up the M11, join the A14 then the A1. Then come off the A1 just before Gateshead and join A1231.

It may take you a bit longer, but the traffic is always much better than the M1 (and I find that the roundabouts break the boredom of the journey)
