I used to shut the study door.
Apart from that I can't think of a safe procedure; baby fingers can get into fans, sockets (I have an outgoing power supply on my box) or just pull wires. You might be OK to put it in a giant carton, but I wouldn't bet on it.

lockable pc cabinet?
Only thing i can think of is to put a cordon around your desk, made of safety gates etc, would get in the way but be much safer
How young? my 3 year old nephew and 2 year old niece can climb over the safety gate we've got at the bottom of the stairs.
I've got a lockable door on the front of my computer (but the side is off at the moment as the north(or south) bridge fan is making a noise (think the bearings are going) and I have to give the fan a tap after booting to sort it out. so I tell the little-uns theres a monster in there that'll hurt their fingers and to keep away from it - seems to work.

A friend told his 3 year old son who was being naughty that if he didn't behave the 'man' in the cupboard would get him, not a smart move as he wouldn't sleep for many nights after that
The only way to protect your PC is to have it in a room with a door you can close and lock, as small children have the combined skills of a ninja and an escapologist !

Alternatively there is the radical approach of not letting your child run loose in a room with delicate items or even *gasp* watching them![]()
My pc is in the living room! No room elsewhere.
Well, on a perhaps more helpful suggestion then, what about trying a cardboard box over the top of your PC with a little slot of the DVD drive and on button?
Kinda like an ugly protective cover...
How about teaching them not to touch daddy's PC and the reason why. Punish them when they do. They'll learn very quickly. When they have been good all week by not touching daddy's PC then perhaps involve them with childrens game or story where they can play using the mouse and point at the screen under supervision.
