    What to do?

    So what shall I do?

Basically I've been at college for a year, it's a 2 year computing course. The college is crap (I mean very crap, it's falling apart.. it WILL go under eventually, it's probably the worst college in North Yorkshire..) we had like 1 teacher for all the year pretty much, on top of that he was ill a lot of the time.

Anyway, I have pretty much have half a years worth of work that needs doing in about 2 weeks before I go back to college, which is just looking less and less possible.

What do you guys think I should do? I'm working full time at the moment for the summer holidays, but I do NOT want to stay in this job full time for any longer than I need to. I wouldn't mind getting a full time job but I also don't want to be stuck in a crappy job for the rest of my life.

So suggestions? Restart the first year of my college course? Do another course? Start work full time? Something else? Prostitution?

Keep in mind I would like to do something within computing, I like driving too though so wouldn't mind that.

I'm not off to sixth form college either - don't want to do a load of subjects that I hate, again (GCSEs..)... although our sixth form is pretty good, much better than the college I'm at.

    Re: What to do?

I won't be able to do it by the time I am back at college in September though.. I mean there is a serious amount to do, and as I said I'm working full time too at the moment, so I have like 2 days off a week to do it.. on top of that the work is stupid hard.. where I'd need help from a tutor for some things.

    Re: What to do?

What qualification would you get at the end of the college course? If it's a standard nationally recognised qualification then the college being the worst in the county even shouldn't change the value of it at the end (only your enjoyment of doing it sadly). How much variety does your sixth form offer? If you can find three A levels that you'd like to do (Computing/Maths/something else?) then that would be a very good option.

If you really can't get the work done then either option will mean another two years study. Looking further ahead would be a wise thing to do now, are you interested in University or some other further education beyond this level, and what's the best way get there? Are there any potential employers in your locallity? Contact them and ask them what qualifications they would prefer (and whether you could work there next summer even!).

Education is a time to open doors, I've just graduated from uni having not enjoyed about 50% of the courses I did, but it was time well spent for other reasons as well as just a degree

    Re: What to do?

It's a BTEC National Diploma (Level 3 course, for IT practitioners).

The only thing I would imagine I would like to do at sixth form is computing, but you have to choose other subjects too.. which I don't want to do, I want to do one thing I enjoy doing. Even then though, I heard A level computing is similar to GCSE ICT and that was a load of crap.. it was basically a course on how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Excel.

I would like to work after college, however I will more than likely be wanting to go to Uni so I can actually get a decent job.

Not sure what in computing I want to do, possibly something within networking... programming does interest me but I'm crap at it.

Not really any computing jobs in Scarborough, nothing decent anyways.. so when I do finally go for work the closest place for a computing job would likely be York.

Just to poke your expectations further - you'd do better to be looking at Leeds. There's really not that much in York at all barring helldesk work.

I was on top of it at first, but then the tutors delayed giving us the assignments, and once we actually got them, they gave us about 5 at a time.. and stupid deadlines... so they all just built up..so the 10 odd of us who haven't actually dropped out of the course yet planned to get it all done over the holidays.. however there is such a large amount to do and we need help from a tutor for most of it. I probably didn't help by leaving things till the last few weeks - I thought I would of been able to get it all done though.

Edit: Sorry it's actually about 3 weeks.

At the moment? A wide range of stuff.. bits from pretty much every unit, it's a bit all over the place. Mainly database stuff I guess.

    Re: What to do?

Either work like a badger at the weekends, or chuck a few sickies from your temp job.

More/some qualifications are better to have (at your stage) than work experience - unless the work is directly related to what you want to do.

    Re: What to do?

I did that BTEC at Wyke college - finished it only two years ago.

Some of it is quite hard - relatively speaking when compared to what you're likely to have done before.

Stick with it though, I say. I presume you don't want to go to uni, else you'd be taking a-levels too, but if you can put up with it for another year it might help you get a half-decent job.

Yeah, thats the thing though really, I plan to work hard on my days off but it is actually really hard without help from a tutor. The work I'm doing atm is nothing to do with what I want my future career to be.. it's just to make some money.

Depends, the course will get me into Uni if I get good grades though.. will have to wait and see I suppose. There are some hard parts, some easy parts.. e.g. I find networking quite easy and easy to research, however databases I can do but when it gets into a lot of detail (normalising and such) then it becomes a massive pain.
