    Mosquito Bites!!!

I'm coming to my wits end about this...HOW THE DEVIL CAN I STOP MOSQUITOES FROM BITING THE CRAP OUT OF ME?????

Its so annoying; if I want to sleep with a nice cold breeze to pass through the room I sleep with the window and the door open, but the thing with doing this is that I'm fair game for any mosquitoes looking for a picnic...so I have to sleep with the window closed and thats bad because I sweat so much when I sleep, its quite disgusting.

I'm the only one in the house who gets bitten, so I must taste delicious; an irresistible and very meaty dish to these beasts.

This has happened pretty much every night since I moved down here so about two and a half years up to this day.

Some nights nothing happens; I get no bites, and other nights I get about ten bites consecutively for several nights in a row.

I've been searching for an answer for months and months and I can find no solution.

I've tried eating lemons, eating garlic, lemon grass sprays / oils on my skin, lavender oils,.

I'm not going to try anything you have to burn or spray into the air oh and any pills or whatever as well.

Anyone know what else I can try?

Seriously though, a mosquito net would solve your problem surely.

Rule No.1 for mosquitos is to eliminate any sources of standing water, especially near your house. If this is a long-standing problem and you aren't living in a jungle then you need to take a good look around and fix any problem drains or other areas where water is pooling. This is how mosquitos breed, without standing water their larvae just get swept into the sewers.

[Edit]BTW, when you say you're the only one who gets bitten, you really mean you're the only one who develops a minor allergic reaction to mosquito saliva proteins. Everyone else in the house is being bitten as well, but they don't react to it - still means they can catch malaria though...

    Re: Mosquito Bites!!!

Its wierd because it never used to happen to me, and then a couple of years ago I woke up with bites all over me. I had a couple of huge ones on my neck... They swelled up and where itchy and annoying and horrible, and it looked horrible, it was like I was bitten by some kind of infected slobbering vampire with rabies.

So either my blood changed in the last few years, or mosquitos migrated to my area and made a new home nearby.

Anyway, I remember googling for help because I was desperate for a solution too. I think the only thing that sounded promising was a few types of mosquito repellent. I think one of them you coudl plug in, and one of them was like a scented candle etc.. But I never bothered buying them for some reason. I think its because by the time I had sussed it out, the winter had arrived and the little buggers had all died.

But another thing I read at the time, is that if you have eaten anything with garlic in, they don't like to take your blood. Whats funny, is that I made a huge meal which had loads of garlic in, and I made so much that I kept it my fridge and it lasted me about a week odd. This was last summer and it was dead hot at the time so I was sleeping at night with the window open. I never got bitten once, and one day I woke up and on the wardrobe next to me, staring at me... was a big horrible looking mosquito... If it wanted to bite me, it had had about 8+ hours to have its wicked way with me, but it didn't. So they must really hate the garlic...

So you could do that. The only downside is the bad breath issue. Although, I think there might be some garlic tablets you can get which probably dont give you bad breath.

The only other thing I remember thinking about with this, is that my window is only about 2 foot by 5 foot. So instead of getting loads of mosquito netting and either having to sleep under it like some kind of cadburys flake babe or whatever, and worrying about the mosquitos when I'm not under the net... I thought about just buying some in 2 x 5, and just taping it to my window.

P.S. I've got a flat roof so I got rid of the water off that but it didnt seem to help. But that might just be because I have a drain near my window too.. so they could be living in the drain under the grid. Which I can't clear out. (Its not a street grid, its a little grid where the drain pipe from my house comes down and drains into)

I was contemplating that, but having read about them, they can get stuffy, depending on what size holes it has, so that defeats the object of what I'm after.

Oh, and I live in a VERY bushy, and leafy area, apparently someone nearby has a pond, I'm not sure

Badly-managed ponds are a health-risk. If your neighbours' pond is breeding mosquitos then he needs to do something about it (easiest thing is just to put mosquito netting over the pond). It's up to you, but the law is on your side, and mosquitos from his pond are probably eating everyone else as well.

Mosquitos are bad news, and I'm a doctor, so this is a professional opinion. They can spread a large number of blood-borne diseases apart from malaria and their breeding grounds need to be shut down.

    Re: Mosquito Bites!!!

Here are the steps I'd take:

    1) If you can find out who has a pond nearby, go and have a friendly chat with him and discuss the problem.
    2) If your neighbour doesn't want to be co-operative, inform the council.
    3) If the council doesn't want to take action, take it to your MP.
There are several steps you can escalate it from there, just be firm. Your area has been plagued with mosquitos for almost 3 years and this needs to be stopped, just remember that You are in the right and you can take it to a higher level whenever you want. This IS an issue that affects the safety of everyone around the pond, whether they know it or not.

    Re: Mosquito Bites!!!

Having spent several memorable holidays in various mosquito infected regions of France and Greece, most spray on bug repellents don't do anything. The plug in sort vary in power, one we bought out there did a fairly good job. The only surefire way we found was to use mosquito netting, if you're only falling asleep in one room, sort out some netting for the windows and doors, job done.

Definitely put screens on your windows. I wouldn't have any blood left with the mosquito populations in my neck of the woods without them.

    I feel your pain Beanie.

I woke up last Sunday after clambering in from clubbing at 3 am opened the window as normal as my room was like an oven of epic proportions and went to sleep.

I rose at 11am to find that my ankles had been part of a savage mosquito buffet over night.

They ain't half little buggers ain't they and seeing as I live about 200m from the local nature reserve I expect they came from there.

    Re: Mosquito Bites!!!

The question was when I was in Corfu, why do you see some people with literally 40 - 50 bites on them and others with none? They seem to like certailn people and this is not being rude it tended to be the people who weighed the most. I could of done reserch on this whilst abroad it was discussed that much...
