    Can you...

..give blood if you have drank alcohol the night before?

Google seems to bring lots of answers up, saying yes and no... so I'm not sure what to believe.

Oh and there is nothing on the NHS questionaire thing saying not to come in if you've had a drink.

Firstly ..good on you if you are donating. Why not give drinking a miss if you know when you are going to do it ?

    Re: Can you...

you can give blood after a night of alcohol, but definitely not recommended, as you'll be severely dehydrated

Yeah, it will be my second time. Didn't give it a miss because there was a lot of people I knew going out, so I had to go out too

I think there may be another next Tuesday though so I might just go to that one if I'm not working..

Hmmm, well I'd be ok if I drank loads of water after though right?

    Re: Can you...

Can't you ask the Nurses? they check that your healthy enough when you go...

I'm going again on the 29th....I bruise really easily and the last time I went I ended up with a huge purple bruise where they'd stuck the needle in, they wouldn't let me leave until they'd bandaged it all up and kept me hanging around for 10 minutes afterwards and that was after I promised to go straight to my Doctor if I felt ill, it's a pain but it won't stop me donating, AB Rh+ is rare appaently

I know it's different for people who bruise easily, but it's amazing how many nurses are incapable of drawing blood without screwing it up.....you'd think they'd have it down the number of times they have to do it, and yet the horror stories you hear are beyond belief....

    Re: Can you...

It can't be easy pushing an incredibly sharp needle in such a way that it goes through skin but not the vein wall! One slight mistake, a bit too much angle or a bit too much pressure and you'll break the vein wall and cause bruising.

Still, it's better than someone dying who needed that transfusion eh?

    Re: Can you...

The preliminary tests check for anaemia anyway, so you could easly replace the water you lost through diuresis by drinking without screwing up your blood. Even if there were some alcohol left in your blood it's going to be very little, and it gets diluted by mixing with 7 other pints, minumum.

Most blood is used in surgery, and it's sort of "in one end and out the other" as the patient continues to bleed, so it can be diluted even more.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. The NHS is happy to have it and the possibility exists that you helped to save someone's life. So well done.
